Subject:ATRAC compression?

Does anyone know about the type of compression or other influence the Sony ATRAC codec has on sound quality? I'm new to the minidisc medium, but I have a big project coming up where the finished product(s) will be on MD, so I'm trying to figure out the best format to burn. I'm familiar enough with the other format options (i.e. .wma, .wav, .mp3, .raw), but I know nothing about the proprietary ATRAC(3). I'm guessing that each of the 70-80 MDs that I'll end up with will only be about 15 minutes long, so I'm not really worried about fitting 5 hours of music on one disc. I'd much rather have the best quality I can get. Also--I searched back through the archives, and discovered that as of several months ago, there was no other option for recording to this format, other than using the unit's included software for conversion. Has anything changed? Is there a better way? Any assistance would be helpful. I need to start laying out this project soon. Oh-I'm using WinXP and SF6.0, with an Audiophile 2496 soundcard (and it's included software). Master files will be spoken-voice recorded from cassette into SF and some mp3 files. |
