Alright, I've been using Sound Forge for a few months now, where I've had no probs up till now. I've started getting clicks in my recordings. It's not coming from my line in connection, as I've tried recording while playing a cd in my rom, and still get the clicks.
I have an audigy Platinum sound card, where I've not had any bother with it.
Has anybody ever had this problem, with clicks in there recordings??????

Tony.

Exit all unessesary apllications running in the backgound. ie: Anti-virus, screen savers, calender reminders, ect. (and lurking spyware)

Alright mate, it's not that.
I've also tried re-installing sound Forge.

It's version 4.5 I use. I was going through the help menu, where in the trouble shooting
guide : When I record or play files I hear what sounds like small clicks in the sound, it says :

When Sound Forge is recording or playing audio data it moves large amounts of data between your hard drive and your sound card. This can be a tremendous amount of work for your computer depending on the kind of system you have. If Sound Forge can’t move the data fast enough then you will hear small gaps between blocks of data that typically sound like clicks or puttering. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the overhead during the time Sound Forge is moving sound data, all of which are covered in the chapter called Optimizing Sound Forge.

In the optimize Sound Forge Section, under Hard Drive use, it says :

Sound Forge is a disk-based sound editor, which means that all editing operations are performed on your hard drive rather than in your computer’s memory. This allows Sound Forge to edit sound files of almost unlimited size. Sound Forge also stores undo/redo information and clipboard data on the hard drive.
The drive you specify for Temporary storage (on the Performance page of the Preference folder) must have enough free space to store the data for each opened sound file, as well as undo/redo information, and the clipboard. Although this can use a lot of disk space, it allows you to edit long sound files that could never fit into your computer’s memory (RAM). And hard drives are typically much cheaper than memory.

Since Sound Forge is hard-drive intensive, the faster your disk access, the faster Sound Forge will be. The easiest thing to do to improve your performance without buying new hardware is to defragment your hard drive. Over time, and especially with heavy use, a hard drive can become fragmented. This means the data stored on the hard drive gets scattered across the surface of the disk, making your files discontiguous. When files are discontiguous, the hard drive must jump around to retrieve the data. This jumping around can slow down access to your files and can be very noticeable on older hard drives. DOS 6.0 and above come with a program called Defrag that will defragment your hard drive. Windows 9x comes with a Disk Defragmenter utility that can be found in the System Tools folder in your Accessories folder.

The following guidelines will help you optimize your hard drive depending on which operating system you are running.
Windows 9x
Windows NT

I'm using XP, so can anybody advise me here. I've defragged my hard drive, and I'm still getting the clicks. It's not my hard drive, because when I record with creative recorder, i don't get the clicks!!!!!

Hey Tony,

I feel your pain. I went through the same troubleshooting steps as you did and nothing worked. BUT, this did:

You most likely have a IRQ conflict - try disconnecting all devices that share the same IRQ address as your sound card. So disconnect any joystick controllers, USB supported external drives, USB digital camera, etc.

Now try recording. You should get a clean signal. Inside your computer, there is always something going on, hardware and software wise, so you need to minimize the conflicts and activity going on inside your computer.

If that does not work, then try lowering or turning off your graphics hardware excelorator.

Let me know if this worked for you. Hope it did.

Cheers!

Hi winter. I tried removing all my USB connections, and still i have the clicks.
The thing is, it never use to happen, an i have not added any new hardware or stuff, it's all very strange. another thing, when I record using creative record, it's ok, there are no clicks, the problem is just with Sound Forge. (My sound card is Audigy Platinum)

How would I go about lowering or turning off my graphics hardware excelerator??

When SF 4.5 was working okay, was it under XP or another OS?

I believe SF 4.5 is not totally compatable with Win-XP. Am I right on this Sonic?

Sound Forge 4.5 is not officially supported under WinXP, but having said that, I keep all versions installed on my WinXP box and use 4.5 regularly with no problems.

I doubt it is a disk access issue on a modern machine, so I'd guess driver trouble, as well. Maybe there's another sound card or on-board audio to try? You could also try increasing the buffer sizes in Options->Preferences->Wave.

check your task manager to make sure your cpu is not peaking.keep it on when you record one time and see what happens.

Hey there Tony. I am shocked that it didn't work.

Do you have XP? If so, maybe you want to restore your computer to when it wasn't giving you recording problems. That might be worth a try. This way if any driver info was altered, it will return to it's original working state.

To change your hardware acceleration settings:

Open Windows Control Panel and double click System.
In the System Properties diag box click on the Performance Tab.
Then click Graphics button under Advanced SettingsDrag the hardware Acceleration slider to the left.

This might do it. I hope that it does.

If not, you may want to reinstall your audio drivers. (Just remember to uninstall the current ones first).

Good luck man,

Winter

P.S. Tony:

One of the best books on Sound Forge out there is Sound Forge Power. It has a great section on troubleshooting.

As numerous users of Sound Forge have discovered, the suggestions for Optimizing the Hard Drive do nothing to stop the clicks or "stuttering".
Have you ever been unable to Defrag because programs running in the background are writing to the hard disk? So the frequent suggestion is to run Defrag in Safe Mode because these TSRs (Terminate & Stay Resident) programs are not started in Safe Mode. Watch SF's "time recorded:" FREEZE for about 1/2 second when a TSR writes to the disk and interferes with Sound Forge's recording. Notice the time of the FREEZE and you will hear the clicks at that time on playback. One could try ctrl-atl-del and end task on all programs running except Explorer, but chances are the culprit is an anti-virus program, like Norton's, running in the background. Such was my case, and I proved through numerous trials that the problem disappears by disabling the AntiVirus Auto-Protect feature. I suspect this problem arises with other virus protection software which, of course, one doesn't need to run offline.
