Subject:4.0d patch breaks 24-bit playback and MIDI input

This is the same problem I had with the 4.0c patch. I've learned a little more about the specifics of it. The playback works fine with 16-bit, but when I'm using 24-bit output, I get errors using either the Microsoft Sound Mapper or the Windows Classic Wave Driver (Audio tab of Preferences). Sometimes, I can play the score once with 24-bit, but the second time I hit the play button, I get the dreaded error message. I can, however, use 24-bit output using the Direct Sound Surround Mapper, BUT sometimes the playback is slow and badly distorted with 16-bit outputs! The error messages are shown below:

Using the MS Sound Mapper:

An error occurred while starting playback.
An Unsupported media type was requested.
The playback device Microsoft Sound Mapper does not exist.
The playback device Microsoft Sound Mapper does not exist.

Using Windows Classic Wave Driver:

An error occurred while starting playback.
An Unsupported media type was requested.
The playback device Santa Cruz(tm) does not exist.
The playback device Santa Cruz(tm) does not exist.

Since the update, I couldn't use my MIDI controller (or any controller) as input because they didn't show up in the VSTi synth window as an option (they did, however show up on the MIDI tab of the Preferences). I don't remember if this option was in the earlier version (4.0b), but I discovered by unchecking the "Auto MIDI Input routing" box, I can now use any MIDI device as input for the synths. I can't see why anyone would put a "Break MIDI" checkbox in their software. What is the purpose of this checkbox?

I'm running the following configuration:

Windows XP Home 5.1, P4 2.53 GHz, 512 Meg RAM, DirectX 9.0a
Voyetra Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card with 5.1 speaker setup (latest drivers)
Edirol PCR-50 MIDI controller keyboard, latest drivers

I also found out that the rear speakers don't function when using the MS Sound Surround Mapper. They work OK in 16-bit using either of the other two "mappers." Does any of this help narrow down the source of problems I'm having?

Well...24 bit works fine here...but then again - I am using a pro level soundcard (M-Audio Delta 66) not a gaming card like a Turtle Beach. And I am using the ASIO driver set not the MS Sound Mapper etc...

Nothing wrong with 4.0d playback wise that I can see...very smooth. I would suspect your drivers cannot handle 24 bit as a starting point for this problem.

The point of the "Auto MIDI Input routing" is to avoid having to route MIDI inputs to softsynths manually. By enabling this option, ACID will route the MIDI input to the softsynth that is active or has focus. This is done by either clicking on the Softsynth bus, the Softsynth property page, or an ACID MIDI track.

This is discussed in both the readme, the manual, and the online help.

That would seem the case, BUT, it all worked fine with 24-bit output with 4.0b. Everything worked fine, including 5.1 surround output. Now it's broken. I'm considering two solutions: revert to 4.0b (again) or buy a sound card that's known to work with 4.0d. Anyone have a recommendation for a card? SB Audigy 2, perhaps?

We have confirmed that 24 bit playback with WDM/WaveClassic has a problem with 4.0c/4.0d. We are working on a fix.

Yes serious problems here too. I have 4d and a Motu 2408MKII wintel xp, etc. Does not recognize the audio ports. Completely froze my XP box, it needs a hard reboot.

Also, why does the Acid 4 Midi Clock freeze my devices after a few minutes? Worked like a charm in version 3, now acid 4 midi clock is a mess?? Can't we fix this?

Very disappointed. What happened to UAT, beta testing and debugging?
