I have tried many different takes, and even sang louder!,..but it just sounds like louder crap!....I have never recorded vocals on anything else, this is a first time, is their a better program for recording vocals? or is it a problem with my mic?..

How does is it actually sound? Does the recorded audio simply sound dull and lifeless, for example? Are you using a pro-quality mic and audio interface to record with?

Have you tried singing with another application or to tape?

"its all off key, and has no emotion" simply sing on key with a little more emotion. that should clear it up right away. hehe

Recording vocals is something you have to learn. It probably won't work the first time. And recording your on vocals can be even worse. See if you can get a friend to help. It gets better... or you you end up doing instrumentals.

Here are a few tips I've learned over the last couple decades.
I hope they help.
Record your vocals without peaking the meters.
The louder you project your voice the more emotion will come thru.
Try pluging one ear while singing.
Sing within your range, don't strain.
Add a little reverb to smooth out your vocals.
Sing a few inches from the mic, not right on top of it.
Practice, practice practice.
Do a few dummy takes then when your voice has warmed up, go for it.
Record several takes and mix the best together.

Here is a page which fully explains the secrets of recording. Bookmark it and refer to it often.

i dont know how reliable that page is. i find it hard to trust someone that spells mic "mike" and even worse cardioid "cardiac". pretty horrible article actually. there is way better information out there that has not been roughly translated from other far away languages (and old backwards techniques that arent up to date).

HA! Manzoo! You either did not read the full article, or have absolutely no sense of humor. I'll assume you didn't read it fully.

Okay, so I have to wonder:

Is this a joke?

Or worse:

Is this not a joke?

Noose,
I appreciated your post! Especially since I get the same results(LOL). I blame it on the use of my $8 Labtec PC condenser mic ; )

Ahhhh yes, Wendy Carlos! Thanks for posting that. I'm still trying to emulate him.....I mean her. I didn't know she did the soundtrack to Tron. I'll have to watch that again.

Thanks for ALL the vocal tips here. "You guys are (indeed) too nice!"

Singing into a microphone is an art...can anyone say Frank..? considering what our predecessors had to work with for mikes, it's amazing the sounds they got, live or "memorex"...these days we're just gilding the lily, in even live performance...
