Subject:How do I know the actual bit depth of a file?

I open a file and look at 'format' under 'properties'. I thought it was recorded at 24 bit but it says "1:512 (16-bit)" under the "Peak data ratio" listing. It says 24-bit under Source and Playback. I'm confused. How do I know what bit depth the file actually is?
