OK I've bought Sound Forge Studio 6.0 yesterday by I am having major trouble getting it to work. I can't get Sound Forge 6.0 to record any sound from my mixer. I have a Compaq Evo N610c laptop, Gemini UMX-7 mixer, Denon integrated amplifier and Technical SL1200 mk2s. Having read the notes as I (mis)understand it should simply be a case of taking a stereo-out (master) from the mixer into the soundcard line. I have to a headphone & microphone port on the front of my laptop and have been connecting a Y cable coming out the master out on the mixer with a 1/8" end into the microphone port (line in). Is this right? I'm also getting confused on how to adjust the volume settings! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

If you're getting no sound at all, you probably need to change the record settings on your sound card, which you can normally do via Windows Audio Properties, or similar, depending on your version of Windows. Sound Forge will record what you tell it to record, but not within the program itself... I've enquired in this forum a few months ago about recording into a laptop, and learned a great deal from fellow-users - might be worth searching for the thread. In a nutshell, though, you will probably be disappointed by the results, and this will be down to the laptop's poor quality sound card - a tidgy little unscreened device packed into a small space and surrounded by nasty RF-generating devices. You may have more success with an external sound card plugged into the USB if your laptop has one. Finally, if you use the on-board sound card rather than an external - there may be a serious mismatch - your mixer out really needs to feed a line-in rather than mic-in. (I have the same problem with my Dell Inspiron - no line-in input!) Careful adjustment of the levels in Audio Properties/Recording may help, but not much, in my experience. As ever, it depends on what you find acceptable quality! |

In addition to what phil said, Many, if not most laptops can only deal with mic level, despite what the Windows volume/recording window parameters state. You could try a line-to-mic level attenator but you'll still be dealing with a consumer quality sound card. A external USB sound card would be the best solution. |
