Subject:Getting SoFo to record music being played on desktop

This may be elementary to some, but I've read threads about not being able to record what is being played on the desktop--using WinAmp, RealPlayer, etc. I found a favorite old song online in Real format (.ram), downloaded it, was playing it, and got a bright idea: I used a male-male cord to connect the speaker's headphone plug to the in-line of the computer. Then I recorded with Sound Forge and obtained a waveform for editing.

If it worked for you, fine, but...

1. A mismatch is possible between IP and OP (maybe not in your case!)

2. Surely simpler to change your record source in Audio Properties/Recording Control to record Wave instead of Line In (or Analog Mix, depending on what your sound card offers.)?

Which prompts a lateral thought... it would be handy if the source could be changed within Sound Forge itself (normally the only choice is between Sound Mapper and the audio card) rather than having to faff around in Windows. Maybe it can't be done, but it would be useful and a time saver for some people if it could!

Use VAC - Virtual Audio Cable . Real Player (or whatever) output to the VAC vitrual device, and the SF input set to the VAC virtual device. No added da-ad .

Do a googler to find VAC.
