I just used partition magic to move all my 40 gig data to a new 120 gig drive. Everything I've tested runs great except Sound Forge 6 and Batch Converter 5. They give errors and say please reinstall software. The whole advantage to using Partition Magic is to NOT have to reinstall everything. We are these two products balking? |

That's strange, I recently did something even more complicated and I had no problems: I got a new computer, first the image of the HD from old computer was copied to the new HD (did this to avoid the risc of corrupting the original HD). Then upon trying to boot the new machine without success I inserted the original winXP (pro - Sp1) CD and did a repair installation. It took a while copying files from the CD and in the end it started OK. I then went to windows update site and lots of updates done before had to be repeated. After that Sound Forge etc could start without any problems and I have been using the new computer for almost two months now. Only peripheral and/or new devices (like printer) needed new installation. Are you also using WinXp? In my case Norton's Ghost was used to copy from the old HD to the new one. |

Possibly, SF didn't move happily because you'd set its swap file to a drive that no longer existed in your new machine - maybe not - it's only a guess. Either that, or perhaps SF is "smart" enough to look for other hardware, sound card for instance, that had changed... And this is a comment on the reply rather than the original question! If you build a new PC you can neither install your original HDD nor ghost it onto a new drive and have WinXP run. The OS looks for your original m/board, CPU and RAM - when it doesn't find it, it prompts for re-install, which is what you in fact did with a repair installation. That's why you needed to repeat the updates. |

I am having a similar problem. I just installed a new Maxtor hard drive. I cloned my old noisy drive to the new one with the accompanying MaxBlast software. I then removed the old drive. Now the computer boots up fine and everything seems to run ok (including Cakewalk) with the exception of the Sonic Foundry apps which all give me a message stating the program needs to be reinstalled. Is there any way I can avoid reinstalling and reconfiguring? If I used Ghost to clone the drive would these apps run ok? Thanks for any help you might be to solve this. |

It only tke a few minutes to reinstall - no ? And a few more to re-register (or a few seconds if your machine is on the inet .... geoff |

Does it? Memory is foggy but I remember it being kind of a pain. Also I have a total of 6 Sonic Foundry programs and my email address may have changed since registration. Don't I need a new activation code for each one? Yeah, maybe I do have a bad attitude abut this but it peeves me to have to do all that. |

e-mail tech support for your activation keys, then wait. And wait. And wait a bit longer. Eventually (several days) they will get in touch - send them as much info as you can so they can match your details to avoid fraud. |

I think the program has to "run" before you can use the activation keys or anything else for that matter. My programs reinstall just fine and go to the internet to register just fine, but when all that is trough and it's time to just "run" them they won't open. I get the face panel and then an immediate error that says, "Sf6 has caused an error and windows has close the program. Please restart the program." I've never been able to get them to run again. I don't have huindreds of dollars to spend on the 900 numbers so I was hoping I couild get some help here but nothing so far. Still out of luck! |

Why spend money on 0900 numbers ? Have you checked this website for info other that this forum ? Ways to register. On an internet connected machine quicker than it took you to write your email. 1- if your machine has an internet connection, install, enter your s/n and click reg online. Takes seconds. 2 - If your machine is not inet connected, click 'register from another computer, and take a floppy with the htm file on it to an inet computer, takes seconds from there, returning with a 'reg' file or activation code on the floppy. 3 - Or go to the register page on the SF site and enter your s/n plus machine ID, and an email with both an activation code and a REG file will come by email within minutes. 4 - Email SF and wait longer. 5 - Ohone them and wait longer. Can't see the problem myself - you do have a s/n ? And you *should* be able to Partition Magic (or XCOPT32 for that matter), it over. Unless something you or PM has done has stuffed it up, the worst that should happen is a registration request. geoff |
