Subject:SF6 - do I need it?

I'm a registered user of SF5 and I'm thinking about upgrading. I've been playing around with a demo, but I'm far from convinced that I need to spend the $$ to upgrade.

Is there any way in SF6 to open a file in direct mode? I'm getting tired of having to go thru the save process and then rebuilding the peak file every time I want to save what I'm working on.

Also, why are there 2 status bars at the bottom of the screen that display identical information in them?

Please reply offlist as I don't get out to the forums very often. Thanks!

Check out the tutorials which show the improvements.
6.0 is MUCH faster at processing your changes.

SF6 does not have direct mode. It is non-destructive so many types of edits (cut/copy/paste) and particularly undo/redo are essentially instantaneous. In other words, SF6 is more "pay-at-the-end" while SF5 is "pay-as-you-go" with respect to processing time.

So if you don't work with large media and don't find the non-destructive engine more productive, stick with SF5. But as far as I can tell, you'll hold the minority opinion.

On the two status bars: The one at the bottom indicates an application-wide processing thread reserved for fileio type operations. The one in the data window is specific to that window and either mimics the app-wide thread (open/save *this* file) or indicates a processing thread reserved for effects processing. So opening or saving a file will show up in both bars, but applying a chorus would only show up in the datawindow bar. Both threads allow you to continue simple non-threaded work on other media while they are in progress.
