Subject:Midi to Audio Conversion?

Is it possible to convert midi to audio in Acid? Or in Sound Forge? I ask this because I have several songs with midi data coming in from my keyboard. I have the song saved, but those midi parts from the keyboard only play whenever the keyboard is on and tuned to that particular midi instrument. Is there any way to convert that midi so that it represents permanent audio in the song? That way it wouldn't matter if my keyboard was on or not. I've tried to record sound coming into ACID 4.O PRO as audio, but it does not work for me. It only allows me to record it as Midi. Can anyone help me please?? |

Try soloing the MIDI track in particular, set the Loop Region over the track and then bounce down. (CTRL+M is the shortcut.) Remember that the MIDI track must be routed through a soft synth of some sort to be rendered as heard. If the MIDI track is routed to external gear, then it won't render. HTH, Iacobus |

Thanks for replying mD and please excuse my ignorance on this particular subject matter, but are you saying that the sound from my keyboard cannot be saved as audio unless I route that particular sound through a softsynth(i guess so, you just said it....duhhhhhh). Is it possible for you to explain that procedure for me? I have a hard time with engaging softsynths to work for me. |

If I understand you correctly, you want to record audio from your keyboard, not MIDI, in which case you would need to connect and audio cable from the line out of your keyboard to the audio input of your soundcard. MIDI connections alone will not allow your keyboard sounds to be recorded, only the MIDI data from it. |

As Braulio said, you might want to try recording the actual digital audio coming your keyboard rather than MIDI (which is just a set of instructions). You will basically need to connect your keyboard to your soundcard in order to record digital audio. Typically, keyboard's have 1/4" outs. If you have a plain vanilla Sound Blaster or compatible, you'll have to buy the appropriate adapter cable to connect the keyboard to the Sound Blaster's 1/8" line input. (You can also connect the keyboard to a hardware mixer and then from the mixer to your soundcard.) HTH, Iacobus |

Thanks Braulio and mD for your reply posts..... I think i've already tried(i've tried so many things, hard to remember) recording just the audio from my keyboard and i still had problems. I will try it again when i get home. |

Actually, I think the problem that I am having is rather or not I'm connecting my cables properly from my keyboard to my soundcard. I have the M-Audio Omni Studio Bundle. Would any of you guys happen to have the same setup? If so, could you tell which inputs I should use on the M-Audio break-out box? |

I don't have the Omni, but I think it's Line 3 or Line 4 in. Both are mono inputs, so if your keyboard has individual left and right outputs use both to achieve stereo. Pan one of them left and the other right. |

I went home for lunch and tried to record again from the keyboard, but I didn't get anything to happen. I should be running mono cables individually from the keyboard to the Omni right and not stereo? I'm not getting any LED monitor levels to show any type of incoming signal. Should I be using "m-audio asio" to get audio recorded? It's funny because whenever I switch my audio device from "microsoft wave mapper" to "m-audio asio"(located under options and then preferences on the menu bar at top), I get those LED signal readings to show up, but everything moves so slow, including my mouse!! Man, I want to master this beast so bad!! If I can get audio from my keyboard to add to my acid projects, shit would be super sweeeeeeeeeet!!! |

I finally got audio from my keyboard to record in Acid! Instead of using the "line ins" on the back of my m-audio omni box, I used one of the "mic/instr" jacks on the front of the box and everything worked out fine. The only thing is that the sound comes in mono(even though i have mono cables running into a stereo "y" cable); which is REALLY not a big problem, because i can edit the sound in SoundForge and convert to stereo easily! I just wanted to give you guys a big thanks in replying to my post and helping me solve this beast!! Thanks a million. Keep it moving!!! peace, antonio |
