Save all media files -> W64 - What's the deal?

WT wrote on 5/9/2003, 4:32 PM
I've noticed that every time I save all media with project in Vegas 4, all the audio files are saved as .W64 files. (I don't recall having this happen in VV3) I understand that this Sonic Foundry format allows files to exceed 2 GB - but what if I want to save everything as .WAV? I've checked in preferences, and I've left unchecked "Save large files as .W64"... There doesn't seem to be an option when saving to render to .WAV instead of .W64 neither.

Any ideas?

What's the deal with W64 anyway? Is it some sort of compressed format too? I can't find any literature on the web about it at all. It doesn't seem to be any kind of legitimate standard since I can't think of any other software that can work with it...

Thanks!
WT

.w64 is SonicFoundry's on version of .wav with 64 bit headers. This allows files to be enormous, but aside from the 64 bit headers they are identical to standard .wav files. The reason that no other software works with them is because it is a proprietary SonicFoundry format.

I do agree that it would be nice to have an option to have the "save all media" function write to standard .wav files whenever possible.

This has been discussed at nauseum in the past. Sonic Foundry stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the issue and give use the option to decide what formats a project's media should be backed up as.

Thanks for the replies...

I don't recall Vegas 3 having this sort of limitation. I'm concerned that Sonic Foundry hasn't acknowledged this somewhat glaring issue. How am I to work on my projects in other audio software packages once I've archived my Vegas 4 projects now? I suppose I could manually move all the original .Wavs and media to one directory, and point the .VEG toward it... but wasn't that trim and save all media feature made to avoid this hassle? I can't think of many times that I have audio files larger than a gig neither.

I'm a big fan of nearly everything about Vegas 4 - but this really is not cool, SoFo. I hope they do something about this (even though it sure looks like Vegas has been sold out to become Sony's "My First Video Editing Program" to be shipped with VAIO computers...)

Thanks again though, guys!

Don't forget you can always render individual tracks and/or the whole mix as wav files anytime.

OPTIONS

GENERAL
UNCHECK RENDER LARGE FILES AS W64

get it?

btw, you can still open these files in just about any audio editor, just ignore the little clik in the beginning when you convert from RAW

From my original post:

Yup, been there and done that... see above.

Shucks, I was hoping 4.0c would do something about this.

Thanks though.
