Hi,

when I analyse my wav loop in acid, it tells me the bpm is 85bpm, however I know the loop is 170bpm, which is correct? I'm trying to prepare loops for use in cubase

Do you have Sound Forge? If you do, what does its ACID loop creation tools tell you?

How many beats long is the loop?

If you know the loop is 170 bpm, then it is 170 bpm. That is to say if you make your project at 170 bpm and want the loop to play at the original tempo, the loop should be at 170 bpm. Of course what is "correct" is somewhat a matter of context and intent.

ACID tries to make a reasonable guess at the tempo based on the loop length assuming the loop has a common number of beats (1, 2, 4, 8... etc.) and a common tempo range.

We guess 85 bpm is probably more likely than 170 bpm. Note that 170 = 85*2, so ACID has guessed the number of beats to be half of what it actually is (eg. ACID decides the loop is 4 beats, when in fact it is 8 beats).

You can change the number of beats in the "Stretch" pane of Track Properties. Doubling whatever ACID has guessed will probably give you the results you are after.
