I recently bought a midi controller to for my music projects. I really don't knowmuch about instruments and connnecting them to the computer. I running a new PC so everythign should be working fine. I bought a Midi cable w/ midi to joystick sides. I connected it and it didn't work. The controller only has midi out put. The cable came with a program called sound check. It shows you how to connect the things to the PC. I tried it but its not working. Whats wrong.

Do I need another device or something.

When opening a vsti are you enabling your sound card from the drop down list at the top right hand corner of the vsti window? have you been into options>>midi>> and enabled your device? Give those things a try if you already haven't. oh and there's also a GREEN enable button at the top of the vsti window make sure that's checked ....

A VSTi is a virtual instrument. It's a technology developed by Steinberg.

What's the MIDI controller that you're using?

Reveal Music Star. Is a control suppose to work by itself?

Had a hard time finding info on that product. Still, I'm skeptical. MIDI is supposed to act like a loop. (MIDI Out on device > MIDI In on soundcard > MIDI Out on soundcard > MIDI In on device and so on.)

I've heard of devices that have only MIDI out, but that's just half the story.

A controller usually has assignable knobs and such. (See an example here.) Using these features, you can record/playback MIDI with effects such as pitch bending.

Yep. Someone around here has the Oxygen8 and uses it with ACID Pro 4.0 successfully.

I have to correct myself. MIDI controllers can have just a MIDI out. In addition, the Reveal looks like it's only a MIDI keyboard (which just transmits note data), not a MIDI controller per se like the Oxygen, which has assignable knobs.

You mean with what you have right now? Just the basics. You hit a note on the keyboard, and the note plays in the sequencer. You can record MIDI in this manner. But that's about it.

If you wanted to do techniques such as pitch bending, you'd have to spring for a new MIDI controller. I didn't (or couldn't) see such a function on the Reveal.
