Subject:Why Is AC-3 Stereo so low in volume?

Hi. Can anyone tell me why when I try to encode my stereo soundgrack to AC-3 (stereo 2 channel only mode), the resulting file is so low in output? I realise that DVD sound has a huge dynamic range but is there a way to stop the output being so low in level? Its very annoying to get the final mix just right, only to find the AC-3 version sounds so low on Power DVD etc.

I recommend that you tweak the AC-3 encoder settings for your source material. Modifying the dialog normalization value will definitely change the gain when your encoded .ac3 material is decoded. Also, check out the dynamic range compression settings (in the Preprocessing tab). There are a number of factors involved in getting your AC-3 mix "just right". Check out this doc from Dolby:
