I'd like to record the sounds of birds and ocean ater while fishing. I am concerned about wind noise. The recording would be done on a relatively calm day, but there may be a slight breeze. I will be using a high end mini-disc recorder, similar to what reporters use. Any help appreciated. Danny Ayo |

Greetings Danny, Sounds like you need a shotgun with a big furry diffuser. You've probably caught a glimpse of them in the odd TV News report (kinda looks like a petrified woodland creature). These mics are designed specifically for the type of task you wish to embark upon. Check out your nearest/usual music/pro-audio shop/dealer and they'll be able to let you know what's available. Along with the above information, you might want to work on your relationship with mother nature and inform her of the date you're doing the recording, so she can adjust her weather schedule and produce less wind that day. |

Danny In this situation, you can count on wind noise problems - no matter how still the day is. Should you be planning on doing regular sound-effect recording, the best solution is a Rycote zeppelin www.rycote.com (or similar). Example. I have one with two cheap-ish large diaphragm mics (AKG C3000s) mounted end to end and then twisted 90 degrees. The unit is then attached to a light camera tripod and the zeppelin is used face-on, rather than end-on. Only use high-end gear if you can guarantee it won’t all end up in the drink! Weka. |

I recently read in an article by a professional on nature recording that one of the best wind screen techniques is (if you can leave the mic stationary) to put the mic in the middle of a shrub or bush. The writer swears this works better than anything else. drbam |
