Hi,

wondering if anyone else uses an EDIROL UA-1D Digital I/O USB device to transfer recordings to their PC ?

I recently purchased one to transfer recordings to my PC from my portable DAT

I use soundforge 6.0e to record the input and all seems well but sometime in to the transfer 10 - 15 min soundforge seems to stop recording and the meter levels freeze. if i click stop and record the meters "wake up" and show the source tape is still sending signals through.

I also get random pops sometimes

has anyone experienced this problem before ?

im running a P3 666 XP 750mb ram, ample defraged hard disk, no other apps and no screen saver.

regards
Jaime

I was going to say to check your power settings under Control Panel, but it appears you covered that.

Could there be a chance the UA-1D is losing sync with the DAT? (I don't think so myself, but you never know.)

Since the UA-1D uses USB, be absolutely sure that the UA-1D is not sharing USB bandwidth with any other USB device in your system. You'll preferably want the UA-1D on a dedicated USB host controller all by itself.

There's also this info from Edirol's Web site:

"UA-1D: I'm trying to record digital audio from a DAT or MiniDisc player, but nothing records onto my hard drive. How is this supposed to work?

Is your source media copyright-protected? If it is, you cannot make a recording onto your computer through either digital input on the UA-1D. The UA-1D conforms to all SCMS (Serial Copy Management System) laws as they pertain to digital audio.

Was the content of your minidisc or DAT recorded at less than 16bit 32kHz? If you used the SLP feature in particular on a minidisc, there can be problems passing the digital input through to your hard drive. The UA-1D supports only 16bit audio files at 32/44.1/48kHz sampling rates, so your source media must match these settings.

Does your MiniDisc player or DAT machine support Sony's S/P DIF standard? If you are uncertain, this information can usually be found in the owner's manual for your player.

Does your MiniDisc player or DAT machine support digital output? Not all of them do, and even if they have an optical or coax port it doesn't always mean you can output digital audio through it. If you are uncertain, this information can usually be found in the owner's manual for your player.

Have you selected the "USB Audio Device" driver as the recording sound card in your music software?"

Iacobus

Hi Man,

thanks for your response. Im using a PCM-M1 portable DAT, I have a special cable from Core-sounds 7pin sony to COAX which plugs into the UA-1D. The recording is 16bit 44khz and free of scms. I have also selected the UA-1D as the default recording device in control panel and in soundforge.

I tried my motherboards USB and even went out to buy an adaptec duo connect card, still not much more success. sometimes i get 15 mins , 45mins and upto 142 minutes
of recordings before it freezes.

This worked fine with a soundblaster live and soundforge. like you said SF seems to 'loose sync' with the ua-1d while recording.

Is anyone else out there successfully using a UA-1D with soundforge ?

arrgghhhhh !

Jaime

I'd say make sure the USB host controller the UA-1D is on has its own IRQ. This might be not easy to do unless the USB host controller is on an expansion card (like the Adaptec card).

You using Windows XP? If so, I've heard Sevice Pack 1 fixes some niggling USB audio issues. Upgrade to that if you haven't already.

Have you contacted Edirol? If so, what did they say (if they responded)?

hi man,

I tried both my motherboards USB and then went out and got an ADAPTEC DUO connect too
still had the same problems. and yes i have XP with SP1.

No response from EDIROL yet.

im wondering if i need more CPU grunt than a p3 666. I ll see if i can find a cheap P3 1ghz CPU.

cheers

Hi again jamcas,

The PIII 667 should be plenty. You have more than enough RAM too.

The USB controller the UA-1D is on is not sharing IRQ's with other devices, correct? Though XP is more adept at IRQ sharing than previous versions, there's still a possibility of devices not wanting to share. You might to go into your system's BIOS to redistribute IRQ's. (Note not all systems have this feature. Check your system or motherboard manual.)

I can see that the USB ports (motherboard USB and the Adaptec USB) share IRQ 9 along with the network card. Ill assign the network card to another irq and see how we go.
