Subject:Volume Problem

How do I lower the volume of my speakers when I'm recording?
This is probably a dopey question for most of you, but I can't figure it out.
I want to hear my backing tracks, so I can play along, but if my guitar is loud enough to be the right level, it just roars out of my speakers.

The project itself could be too low in volume. What does the Master volume meter peak at while the project plays back?
