Subject:sf 6.0, vegas4.0, and mainconcept?

Ok, I can open an mpeg in my Vegas Video 4.0 no problem. Then when I try to copy to soundforge 6.0, only the audio will open and I get a 'the file is an unsupported format' error. I know before I got vegas, I couldn't open an mpeg in sound forge at all, wanted me to purchase the mainconcept encoder. I read somewhere that if you own vegas video that it comes with the mainconcept encoder. So after I got vegas I thought I would be able to open mpgs in Sound Forge? Do I still need to purchase the mainconcept encoder to open the mpegs in sound forge? What I'm doing is capturing minidv footage, editing the video portion in vegas, and I was planning on doing the audio editing in sound forge, then render it all back in vegas. I guess I still can do the audio, it will open but no video track in SF (and the unsupported error). Am I just lost here? Please pardon my newbie ignorance. Thanks for any help anyone could provide.

Hi Billybobb,

Two things: 1. To my knowledge, and others will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong, Soundforge is an audio editor and doesn't have anything to do with video. 2. Vegas on the other hand is not only a video editor but a multitrack audio recorder/editor as well, therefore why not do all your editing in Vegas?

If the MainConcept encoder is registered (and chances are, it is, if you can open mpeg in Vegas), then, yes, Sound Forge 6.0 should be able to open them just fine and display the video content in the video strip. I had no problems opening mpeg in 6.0e after registering the Main Concept plug-in.

One thing to do is make sure you have the latest update for Sound Forge (6.0e) installed. If that doesn't fix it, you will probably want to contact technical support for help with this. In the meantime, you can probably use the "Open Copy in Sound Forge" option in Vegas to just export a copy of the audio only.

I should clarify what Spy was alluding to. While Sound Forge will open, display, and play the video content of a file, it has no video editing functionality other than truncating it to the length of the audio.

Thank you both! Yes, I needed the 6.0e update. I just downloaded it and now everything is working! I might as well download the latest vegas and dvd arch. update while I'm at it. So much to learn, so little time.
Oh yeah, to spy: I've been editing audio in SF since 4.5, so I'm really familiar with it. I'm extremely new to Vegas, it didn't seem to have all the directx plugins that I normally use in my SF to fix up audio. So now (with any luck) I can open a minidv capture in vegas and edit the video, copy the audio to SF, fix it up, put it back in Vegas and render the package. Hopefully this is how it will all work.
Thanks again for the help! BB
