I own a M-Audio Audiophile 2496. After recording a 24 bit mono file, the playback is in the left channel only (true mono?). If i uncheck \preferences\wave\try open 24 bit\ (which means the output is converted to 16 bit) the playback is equal in left and right channel. Mono recordings at 16 bit doesnt have this playback behavior. Any clues? Is this hardware or software related? |

If you record in mono, there should be no left or right channel only one channel. When you record in mono are you clicking the Record button > New > whatever bit depth and sample rate..."Mono"? MJ |

i have the same thing as the topic starter. i also have an Audiophile 2496. and likewise it only happens with 24 bit mono files. funny thing is tho, in ACID 4.0 i'm using the same drivers as in SF (Delta Multichannel) but in ACID the mono files do play through both speakers. i rarely use mono samples, so that probably explains why i didn't notice it before. still, it's weird that only SF would have this problem and not their other programs. |

I have an Audiophile 2496 (latest drivers) also, so you are saying even though Sound Forge displays a mono file, it physically plays through one speaker? I don't have this behavior in SF or Vegas 3.0 or any app., hmmmm. Do the meters in SF display the same dB on each side? You have of course checked the Delta Mon/mixer (if you're routing through it) for both channels at full attenuation and locked I'm sure. MJ |

yepp, SF6.0e displays a regular mono file and the meters in SF are the same dB on each side. i had previously already checked my audio setup and i was pretty certain it's set up ok. my recent re-check confirmed this. really, everything is working perfectly well in all audio apps i've got, and Sound Forge behaves normally bar this 24 bit mono samples issue. once again, when i play this same file in ACID, Cubase or Wavelab it plays through both speakers. Only SF seems to have problems with it. oh and for me it's really not a big deal. on the rare occasions that i need to edit a mono sample i can handle it. i merely wanted to confirm the topic starter's problem. :) |

Sounds like a driver issue. Sound Forge attempts to open the device as mono and let it do it's own thing. If it fails, Sound Forge attempts to open it as stereo and fills both channels (which is what Vegas and ACID do regardless), but if it succeeds, it just feeds mono data to the driver. At that point, it's up to the hardware. J. |

Aha, hmm. thanks for your posts! So, is this an Audiophile 2496 specific problem then? I would like to know if it's an m-audio driver problem or if the solution depends on sonicfoundry and soundforge. |
