24 bit Cards vs System requirements. help needed -Sound Forge - PC

I returned my new M-Audio Revolution 7.1 sound card and seeking recommendations for a 24 bit recording sound card that will work on my system. The new Revolution did not work well at all, causing all audio play back to skip, crackle and distort. My powered speakers would also pop loudly during startups and shut downs. The minimum requirements for the Revolution is “200 MHz Pentium with MMX, 64MB RAM” The folks at M-Audio told me that you really need at least 700 MHz to run the card without problems. They also told me that I could try to run XP in “Standard Mode” rather than “ACPI” mode to improve performance, but warned me that Dell and Microsoft would not recommend this, and it would be totally at my own risk. I have a Dell Dimension XTS550 PC, Pentium III, 550 MHZ, 512MB RAM, running Win XP Home Edition. I’ve completely tweaked XP for audio performance per all the great tips on this board. I use my computer mainly for Graphic and Audio editing. My software consists primarily of Sonic Foundry and Adobe software apps. I have been using a Turtle Beach Montego II Card with no problems, even though there are no XP drivers available for it. I could care less about playing games or listening in surround sound, but would like the ability to record analog sources into my pc at 24/96. Is anyone using a 24 bit card with XP in a system equal to or less than mine? Any suggestions or sound card recommendations? What is this “Standard Mode” vs. “ACPI” all about? How will “Standard Mode” affect my graphic and audio software performance? Help!! Please…. JC

This was after a horrible experience with an M Audio Quattro USB. I have never slept better after buying this card... Fresnog

Records all the way up to 192 KHz, but is pricey and probably overkill for your purposes. I recently purchased a LynxONE (the first model series) on eBay. This is a great pro card and can do 24/48 analog, or 24/96 digital recording. It is amazingly clean - I believe more so than even some more recent cards. It is found in a lot of Pro setups. These go anywhere from $125 w/o cables to $275 complete on eBay. There are a couple of auctions up right now. And the Lynx drivers are among the best in terms of stability and cross platform compatibility. I run on Win2000 and have nothing but praise for this card.
