Subject:Why can't I change the datarate...?

One of the main things I wanted from the AC-3 encoder over using MPeG audio was the ability to keep the same quality at a lower datarate, making more room for video.

However, whenever I try to lower the datarate for the AC-3 export in Vegas 4, down from the rather high 400+, it says, "settings not consistent, this template will be deleted." What's THAT all about? I was hoping to get the datarate down to 192.

The other thing that's odd is that when you DO change that setting, it shows the max frequency change. Does this mean that the AC-3 encoder is a constant bitrate encoder? Man this is awful!

I don't care about 5.1; I really want good stereo for DVDs at a lower bitrate. But it looks like using AC-3 is now going to take up MORE room in my projects!

Can anyone help...?

What is your source project? 5.1 or stereo? The default template for AC-3 renders from a stereo project is "Stereo DVD". This defaults to a datarate of 192 kbps. The default template for AC-3 renders from a 5.1 project is "5.1 Surround DVD". This defaults to a datarate of 448 kbps.

We do have a feature whereby if your AC-3 encoder settings are not within the recommended DVD specs, we warn you appropriately. However, I've never seen a message that explicitly informs you that your template will be deleted. Is that the exact text of the message?

Anyhow, I'd recommend double checking your audio project settings, to make sure you're in "stereo" mode. Then start from the Stereo DVD template, tweaking other settings as necessary.
