To those of you who are familiar with the usb sound devices:

Would you consider the emagic emi 2/6 to be a professional quality interface?
Thanks,

James

I've tried about 5 usb soundcards, and that one was the worst as far as stuttering in my programs. Also, you can only use 24 bit in one direction. If you want to monitor while recording, you have to switch to 16 bit.

You could also opt to use a mixer with an external USB audio interface such as the EMI 2/6 to monitor while recording using 24-bit but you'd also need another soundcard or audio interface to monitor with. (I can explain if necessary.) The USB audio interface would also have to be able to act as a standalone unit independent of your computer but also be able to record via USB.

M-Audio is coming out with a FireWire audio interface very soon (if it's not out already), BTW.

Thanks, guys, for your input. I started with the Audigy Platinum in my computer, then, picked up an EMI 2/6 at the recommendation of Guitar Center.

Like Dorkus said, the EMI was not entirely stable as a playback machine, so I've been using the EMI to input and the Audigy (which has been stable) to play back. Both cards seemed to be a little noisy--the EMI probably more so than the Audigy.

I guess I should keep the EMI around for occasional use with my laptop, disregard the Audigy, and buy one of the pro sound cards that have recently been recommended--like the Mia, the Audiophile 2496, the Duo, the Terratec EWX 24/96, or something from Edirol.

As always, this forum has been a great resource to me.
