Subject:Acid Pro 4.0b won't run even after re-install (XP)

Hi, i know it's a well-known issue, but i really don't wanna uninstall any of my dx/vst plugins... And even if i do so, i don't think it would change anything cuz since then i haven't installed any new Plugin, and AP4b worked at that time...

I really think the issue is in the registry. Note that even if i full uninstall-reinstall Acid, it won't change anything (It loads the Splash screen... Then nothing happens). In my Task Manager i see the acid.exe showing up then suddenly dissapearing.

Any suggestions ?

Thanx in advance !

Try system restore in XP to a point (date) where you know it worked.

I know this trick too but... Ahem... I've disabled the Auto System Restore Points since a while (seen on www.musicxp.com) !

Any other idea ?

I just want you guys to give me the line to add or to delete in the registry for Windows XP... If it's the point of course...

Try a couple things:

-You using a ATI Radeon video card? Version 2.2 of the drivers were giving SoFo app users problems like the one you mentioned. Head on over to ATI's Web site and pick up the latest drivers.

-Try booting into Safe Mode (repeatedly press F8 on your keyboard while your system boots), and then reboot into normal mode. Sometimes booting into Safe Mode will shake any bugs loose.

Thanx Iacobus and Jimi,

But i don't have an ATI but a cheap nVidia TNT2 32mb video card :(
I tryied your trick about rebooting into norma mode but it didn't work :((

I've done a search with all the keywords that could be related to this issue in this Forum, but none of the suggestions worked here.

Any other idea ?

Seems like you (iacobus) have been throught all the issue of Acid Pro since it exists ! Do you work at SoFo's Tech Support ? I guess no... But you're doing quite a good job over here, they should pay you !

Does this KB article help?

Whoops. Forgot to mention to uninstall ACID while you're in Safe Mode, then reboot into normal mode and install ACID to see if that works. (Try the suggestion above first though.)

I don't work for SoFo. I try to help out here in the forum when I can since SoFo was actually nice enough to give us one.

Hi Iacobus,

Well i knew this KnowledgeBase Article before you mentionned it in your post. It didn't change anything and i've checked up again but it still doesn't change anything... Note that my Sound Forge is working normally.

And under WinXP, you can't uninstall/install softwares under Safe Mode (the MSI Service cannot be launched under Safe Mode, seems that it needs a loads of driver to run propperly).

Anyway i'm not sure if where i was, was the Safe Mode you're talking about. I'm on a french language-based Windows XP, so in french, I thing that Safe Mode is "Mode Sans Echec" (Litterally : "no-failure mode"). Anyway, in the "F8 boot screen" it's the FIRST line that i have to select right ?

Thanx
Isaac

Believe so about Safe Mode being in French.

I can always uninstall just about anything in Safe Mode. (I can even install as well.) Weird that doesn't happen with you. Almost sounds like your installation of Windows maybe got hosed somehow.

I've played with it alot... Maybe i should re-install windows XP ? Will it clean out my registry (even if i keep a backup of my user folder in c:\document and settings\) ? I'll have to re-install all my application won't i ? Won't it fill up my HDD a bit more (or will it erase the files that has to be replaced) ?

Thanx for the info
Isaac

I always opt to backup important documents and just format. You do have to reinstall everything, yes, but you won't have any annoying Registry bloat either.

Key elements to backup:

-Any email and email account settings as well as your contacts. (Outlook Express provides ways of exporting the address book as well as backing up your folders and account settings.)

-Any browser bookmarks or favorites. (These are located under your specific user folder under "Documents and Settings".)

-Any custom documents. (Also under the same folder but can also be in any folder you specified. Make sure you backup all of them.) Some apps also may have settings you can export to a TXT file, like an FTP client site list. Make sure you backup those as well.

-Any username and password info for sites (like this one). Keep that handy unless you want to have the info sent to you via email (which is a pain because you'll have to wait for the email; it's usually right away but can sometimes take awhile).

When you reinstall XP, boot with your Windows XP CD-ROM. (You may have to go into your system's BIOS to enable your CD-ROM drive to be the boot drive.) The XP installation will more than likely detect your existing install and will ask what you want to do. You can choose to start fresh or repair your existing install. Be sure to read everything carefully. I always choose to install fresh but you can try to repair if you want.

Be sure to head on over to Windows Update once everything is up and running, which will patch anything that basically needs it. Finally, install only what you need. Never be tempted to install demos unless you have another PC to try it out on.

Hi Iacobus,

Well i know what to save when backing up (and how many CD-R it'll take !!).

But what i did these last two days was as simply as Booting from XP CD and doing a Restore.

Kept everything and fixed everything (weird isn't it ? I thought it would at least erase my whole registry).

Anyway, that's the most *coward* way to resolve an issue for me but i didn't have anymore patience.

Now the new problem is that when i switch my PC from ACPI to Standard PC (cuz it's better for music and for asigning irqs), then Windows won't boot up even in Safe Mode or in "last good restore point" mode. It's related with the ntfs.sys file.

Didn't got thru the problem, i just went throught another "CD Restore" (+SP1 +DX9 +Hours of loading screens).

Anyway, i thank you for supporting me. If you have an idea about this new issue (but it's not anymore related to Acid), then reply if it doesn't bother this forum ^^

Actually, I've heard these past months that the whole "Standard PC" thing has been relegated to a last ditch effort. (Even MusicXP.net mentions this.) It really isn't recommended unless nothing else works. I think XP SP1 (or SP1a) was tweaked a little better for that purpose (but don't quote me on that).

If it works fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If something gets hosed down the line, then I would consider wiping the system clean with a format.

The only way that I know to safely do this is to wipe your drive clean and reinstall the os to a freshly "scan disked" drive. When you first start the installation you'll see at the bottom of your screen a dialog saying press F6 blah blah blah...immediately press F5. Later in the insatllation you'll get the option to install it in standard PC. This is the only way I know or have heard of that will work correctly. Doing it later will only scew things up.

The way I look at it: single cpu=standard PC
Dual CPU=ACPI mode

You won't get IRQ conflicts with a dual but with a single your OS will bundle all your components to irq 9 [?]. I'm able to have my firewire card[irq #11],soundcard[layla irq #15],separate.

This is what works great for my system. Anyone with any new info about this I'd like to hear it too.

HTH.

Ed.
