Subject:ACID PRO 4 keeps locking up my machine and running slowly

This is weird and just started happening. First, I'm using an IBM Intellistation, P4 with 2GB RAM. I also use Sound Forge 6.0 and Cakewalk SONAR and am not having problems with these or any other software on my machine. At first I thought it had to do with loading video files into ACID, but creating any project, opening a project, etc. slows my machine down to a crawl and sometime s I have to re-boot. I am using the M-Audio Omni Studio interface and one odd thing I noticed is that in my other applications my audio card is listed as M Audio Delta 66(3/4) but in ACID it is listed as M Audio Delta ASIO. I uninstalled and re-installed, then downloaded the 4.0b upgrade; still no improvement. What is going on???? Thanks, Robert |

Did you try installing just the 4.0b update? It actually can act as the full version. (You'll need your serial key when you launch for the first time.) Did you also try uninstalling the Delta drivers and then reinstall? (Be sure you use the Delta uninstaller that comes with the drivers before you try installing newer drivers.) HTH, Iacobus |

I'll give both suggestions a try. I did read the readme.txt which explains that I need some BETA M-Audio drivers which supposedly fix this... Let me try now. Thanks |

I uninstalled ACID and my M-Audio drivers, then reinstalled ACID PRO 4.0b. Without installing my M-Audi drivers I opened ACID Pro and it is still running slowly. It really died when I tried opening a video file. What else can I try? Thanks, Robert |

I personally would and have stopped using Acid 4.0 altogether. If an application causes problems constantly it hampers my creativity, increases my frustration level. So why continue to use it, I prefer spending my time doing productive work rather than fighting ware glitches. Anyway that my solution. There are some Beta drivers at the M-Audio site that fix the Acid 4.0 problems, 5.10.00.29x12 (beta). Be sure to use the M-Audio uninstaller, as piling drivers on top of another causes problems. If you're using the M-Audio ASIO drivers those are the selection offered, but if you change to Windows Classic Wave Drivers the selection changes and you can then select other options as your playback device. I guess I wonder if you've got Sonar why use 4.0? |

What if you tried using "Windows Classic Wave" (or WDM) instead of ASIO? Also, if you're using ASIO in SONAR, you might be asking for trouble. Even though some drivers are billed as "ASIO multi-client" there are still problems with apps sharing ASIO drivers. ASIO just isn't as flexible as WDM in this regard. If you're not using MIDI all that much in ACID, try switching to WDM drivers. HTH, Iacobus |

I've been using Tracktion myself. I keep checking back on the SoFo websites for Acid updates and news though, because I'd love to resume using it if and when some of the bugs get worked out of it. Laurence Kingston |

Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded the beta drivers and my problem is persisting. I find both ACID and SONAR useful depending on the project. For instance, I really like ACID for loop-based video scoring. SONAR does not offer the various synch to video options as ACID. I prefer SONAR for non loop-based, multi-track video scoring. Although SONAR uses ACID loops, I find ACID easier and faster to use. I was very happy with ACID 3; my problems began when I upgraded. I'd rather find the solution than trash ACID altogether. Thanks |

I've switched to the WDM drivers in ACID, but it still runs very slowly. This is getting rather frustrating. Thanks |

Very puzzling. You've done all the basic, standard troubleshooting steps, correct? (Shutting down any unnecessary programs in the Systray, in the background, etc.) Iacobus |

What OS are you using? Windows 9x and Me are reported to have issues with large amounts of RAM. Does this apply to you? Also, it also sounds like something may be causing a memory leak, causing your system to hemorrhage RAM even after the suspected app is closed. It can't be ACID, because if it was we'd all have that problem. Be sure nothing essential launches or has launched via the System Configuration Utility. HTH, Iacobus |

Thanks. I'm using and IBM IntelliStation P4 with 2GB RAM. I believe I have eliminated any un-necessary tasks but I'll keep trying... Robert |

There's a program called "enditall". I use version 2. It does a great job of closing extraneous tasks, and it's a free download: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0%2C4149%2C697%2C00.asp Laurence Kingston |
