I've been using SoFo for a couple of years now, but my brother is wondering if he needs everything SoFo has. He's been looking into the softwares listed above but because he's a newbie he can't really tell if they're glitchy or oversimple or what. Are any of you familiar with those programs? It would be a lot simpler if some experienced unprejudiced person would just let us know what's what. |

My oppinion: SF is more intuitive and easier than CE. I havn't used the other apps. Download the demo, try before you buy. |

The only one of those i've used is Sound Forge, so i can't offer any comparisons. However, it might help those who have used the others if they knew what it is your brother wants to accomplish. Some of the packages may be better at somethings than others. It's possible that, even if there are only a few things he wants to do, that those things are only possible in Sound Forge. |

"It would be a lot simpler if some experienced unprejudiced person would just let us know what's what." Well, I think you've come to the wrong forum for that. Obviously everyone who actually posts here on a regular basis, is going to be bias, favoring all the Sonic Foundry products. Basically it's the different folks/different strokes realism. What drew me towards their products, might not be beneficial for you. Download all the demos and give them a whirl and see what you like best and tickles your fancy. This IS VERY time consuming, I did this before I decided and jumped in learning the ins and outs of a particular program. Do you buy a product because other people say it's the best? If so go buy Protools and come back crying in a couple of years because your wallet is empty and you just found out Vegas actually does most everything Protools does, just ten times quicker and easier. |

My "biased" ranking for consumer level audio software: 1. SoundForge Studio 2. Goldwave 3. Cakewalk 4. CoolEdit 5. Voyetra Stay away from Magix. |

Many thanks for the feedback! It really helps to see the kind of responses, EVEN IF we are all Forge users here. Notice how nobody said all other programs are crap. That shows how fair-minded we are. Fact is, I did download those demos (and others MUCH more scanty) with an aim to making the decision for my brother. Thought I'd quickly run them through their paces and come up with a winner. Perhaps he wouldn't have to get SF if something else was just as good without all the bells and whistles. BUT...as Rednroll so reassuringly states, this is VERY time-consuming, infinitely frustrating, and made me come to wonder if perhaps I was really an idiot. When you get too used to one program, it is truly hard to "evaluate" another one. It's not brand-loyalty; it's habits. I finally gave up, burned all the installation files onto a CD, and mailed it to him. Now I'll send him this thread. |

He probably doesn't need the extra features of the full version of SoundForge. The SoundForge Studio at ~$70 is a great value considering what you get. |

"When you get too used to one program, it is truly hard to "evaluate" another one." This is Oh soooo true. I think every user here has gone through this, because another app offers a feature not currently in the program they're using. So they try the other program out and the frustration of not being able to do 90% of the work flow they use too, in a quick and easy manor easily overwhelms the 1 or 2 features you're currently missing. So you'll see in these forums as what I'll refer too as the "Pipeline" syndrome. Basically users coming in whining for a features on a regular basis using the "this other program has it, why not yours?". I occassionally do the samething, when I want something bad enough.....it never works though. :-) |

I agree entirely. When you think about it, SF Studio is amazing: 1/5 the price, with about 4/5 the functionality. I only hope there'll be a SF Studio 7. |

Cooledit has a way better 24->16 bit dithering algorithm than Sofo and it does burn CDs. It doesn't look as friendly as sound forge though. |
