Dood. You just made a huge mistake! I've known AOL to phuck just about everything up and totally posess your PC like Satan. Good luck uninstalling it...which I highly recommend. NO ONE should use AOL on and audio PC. When you do realize the magnitude of your mistake, you'll want to get RegCleaner since simply unistalling it won't work: http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.php or perhapse reformat.

Cheerz!

ever heard of a dual-boot system?

you can do it with what you have. you'll just have to start from scratch (you have to do that anyway since you put aol on it).

the idea is to split your c: drive in half, install windows on both, install aol on one and acid on the other.

My advice would be to leave AOL and get a better ISP.

Man oh man I just noticed the different posts you put up, you've got more troubles than Sadaam. I think I may have a remedy for all your ails...
1) What with the price of computers being so low these days, buy used/barebones puter. I built a PII-800MHz,128MHz Sdram,20GB/5400rpm H/D, for $175.00, can get them cheaper. This is the system I use for Internet,in your case(AOL)I personally wouldn't use AOL if they paid me. Anyway show your girl you love her, get her, her own puter.
2) Reformat your H/D and reinstall your O/S virgin, use it as a Dedicated Audio Machine.

3) Get a sound card.

Before you uninstall AOL too quickly, think of which one you'd rather see naked again. Your girlfriend or the PC? ;)
I think in this case I'd also recommend the cheap PC for internet and such, with AOL. That leaves your PC for audio only. The best possible set-up!

i must admit i've always been sensitive about this type of stuff. i currently use 3 computers daily: one for audio, one for internet and BS, and a mac for everything else.

first of all, i never let chicks touch ANY of my computers. they don't call them PERSONAL computers for nothin'. i have too much time, money, and energy invested in broadband, networking, and optimization to let someone download some spyware, virus, or other crap.

forget the dual-boot. why screw with your OS just so your girl can I.M. her friends and check her spam? AOL is the virus of ISPs. it screws everything up and loads too many things at startup, plus it's hard to get rid of.

spend $150 bucks and get a separate CPU for bullsh*tin' or tell her to go to the library....or her parents.

just my thoughts.

I disagree...

I have my computer partitioned and have to say that it hasn't done anything but HELP me. ALL my internet downloading goes through my first partition:ie: I have nortons antivirus AND firewall [zone alarm] set to max protection. This way I can scan the internet and work on B.S. if I choose to. Free of anything getting to mess with my computer. Plus on this partition I have NON audio/video related apps installed like microsoft office,nortons,etc...

My A/V partition only has those apps on it thats necessary...ie: Vegas/Sonar/acid/etc...runs great. Tweaked for a/v.

Your not screwing with your os at all. Just giving it less room to take up which also makes the harddisk work less because it only has to scan 10 gigs instead of 40 gigs. Neither of which realizes the other exists so I can just erase and reinstall in a heart beat without worrying about messing up the other partitiion.

It only takes a few minutes[2-3?] to boot up from one to the other.
If I mess up and forget something on the web like a update to a app I can just download it also from there. Ofcourse I'm taking a chance but I only do that with items I deem trustworthy. Never email though. Think about it.

It'll cost you nothing but harddrive space and a little of your time to set this up but IMHO you'll never regret it.

Ed.
