Hi everybody, I am new to this forum, so please don't kill :) me if this question was asked many times. I tried to use search, but it searches knowleg base instead of forum posts. I am going to buy new sound card, and I am trying to choose between two that are available in the local computer stores: 1) SB Audigy 2/Plutinum ($129/$199) and 2) M-Audio Revolution ($99) Which one is better for recording and surround mixing, and etc.? Thanks. |

They’re both consumer level products, but M-Audio at least MAKES pro level products, so I’d go with the revolution. |

dude, stay away from the consumer cards and forget about trying to mix in surround. surround is very complex and not something to be taken lightly. to do it right takes alot of stuff in the right room. the prices on quality stereo sound cards have come down so much in the past two years. there's no excuse for anyone to use a gamer card anymore. i would suggest the m-audio Audiophile 2496 or terratec ewx 24/96. both should be about $130-150, so for a little bit more you get better drivers, sound quality, and software bundles. |

don't shop computer stores for audio gear. thats like going to a buick dealer to buy a dragster. listen to coolout and get yourself a decent entry level audio card for your learning year(s). then go out and get a pro audio card to flex the skills you will have learned. |

This is a great value... http://www.terratec.net/ttus/products.htm will out perform any Creative product, I have an Audigy and this is better, I also have M-Audio Delta 66 & Audiophile 2496. I use the Delta for recording, Audiophile for Hi-Fi mixing/playback, Audigy for Low-Fi mixing/playback. |

I am very happy with my newly purchased DMX 6fire. Although i have found some of its limitations it is better than creatives offerings and is true 24bit 96khz which is nice.. and the value is similar to what yu are stating.. approx £150. Just wish they would divise a driver for it that will allow multiple asio drivers!! Anyway it pisses all over my SBlive.. so anything over than creative! |

Two cards pretty much stand out from the crowd: The Audiophile 2496 and the MiaMIDI. There's also a ton of choices from their respective companies, in addition to those choices available from Terratec and Edirol. Be aware of soundcard surround issues dealing with ACID Pro. HTH, Iacobus |

But what card for running Windows XP w/SP1 installed and NO DX9 (yet)? I have an SBlive 5.1 in there now and haven't completely converted over to using that system as my main audio/recording platform. Although I probably should. I need to get all my acid projects over to that box as it is so if one system dies I have them available elsewhere... So, what's *best* and cost effective for WinXP w/SP1 and no DX9 (yet). I may go find that and install it to the other XP install on that system to see if I notice anything good/bad with it. Mike |

You should be OK with the choices I mentioned before. I know I never had any problems with my Audiophile 2496 or USB Duo (both from M-Audio) with Windows XP SP1 w/ DirectX 8.1 or DirectX 9.0. (Windows XP actually ships with DirectX 8.1.) I've heard of similar success with other pro-level vendors such as Echo. Creative has released drivers fairly recently for the Live! in Windows XP. Might want to go over there if you haven't in awhile. HTH, Iacobus |
