How do I stop Soundforge adding silence to the front and back end of my loops when I save as Mp3?

You don't.

Save as WAV if you're creating loops.

Like Chienworks said, you cannot get rid of the silence at the beginning and end of an MP3. It's inherent to the format.

In addition to WAV, you can try the lossless-but-compressed PCA format, but only SoFo apps support the proprietary format.
