Subject:Video in Acid - some basic advice please

I have some questions:

1. Is it possible to lock the video with it's own audio track so that if I move the video clip the audio moves with it?

2. How can I select a video track and an audio track at the same time? I tried 'select all' but this doesn't select the video.

3. Is it possible to group audio tracks so if I move one the others move?

4. Would I be better trying to compose using Vegas 3?

5. Is anyone using video in Acid 4.0?

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Can't help as reagrds Acid but you can do questions 1,2 & 3 very easily in Vegas Video 3, which I guess answers question 4...

1. No.

2. No.

3. Yes. Use the Selection Tool and select a range of events, or use the "Select All" command and simply click and drag an event in the group. They should all move together.

4. Depends. I've always imagined using (and used) ACID to score a finalized and completed video. If you're throwing ideas around, using both would probably be your best bet.

5. I am. Really like the ability to score a video, render the audio and have it sync perfectly in another app. I love ACID's ability to score using tempo maps, which lets you sync music to cue points in your video as you desire.

Thanks for the link, Iacobus, the tutorial looks like it's just what I need. I notice though that it begins with deleting the video's audio track. I think it's a real drag that it's not possible to select the video clip and it's audio together. This means if I move the position of the video within a project I have to move the audio separately. This seems really counter intuitive and I hope this gets changed.

I think it should be possible to group audio events. I know different audio events can be selected and moved with the selection tool but that means having to go through the selection process each time. I know vector drawing programs are radically different but the ability to group different objects is a real time saver. I know it's possible to mix elements to a new track but this is also an extra step and results in loops that may not be finally required.

Just a thought?

If you're running a lot of audio and experience video playback degradation and/or audio problems, you'll find totally compressing the track channels to smallest possible on playback will usually clear things up. I've experienced this in Acid, Sonar and Cool Edit. The playback channel graphics eat up a lot of CPU time when they're all running full-length.

Thanks for the tip, Maruuk. I haven't experience problems like this so far.

I'm really wondering about why it's so awkward moving video around in Acid. And why is it only possible to have one video track?

Are there any tips or tricks people can recommend to make working with Acid and Vegas together more streamlined?

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

I just finished the scoring tut. It is very good at showing how to tempo map with ACID. On the flip side, sometimes, I want the music set and then edit the video to suit the audio track.

That's where Vegas would come in. ;o)

I believe SoFo made this intentional with each app's features complementing each other. You could render the audio out of ACID Pro and bring that into Vegas, where you could do what you want with video.

ACID's features lie mostly with music. It's strengths complement Vegas and vice versa. You could also add the strengths of Sound Forge (digital audio editing) into the equation, which complement both ACID Pro and Vegas.

Depending on the situation, I'd render out what I would need to work with in the other app. For example, if I wanted to score a completed video in Vegas, I'd render out the results and bring that into ACID. On the other hand, if I wanted to edit video but already have a completed music score, I'd render the results out in ACID and bring that into Vegas.

Some users would find this cumbersome but frankly this keeps the respective apps as modular as possible not only with each other but with other third-party apps as well. I highly doubt anyone would buy a 3-in-1 app just to get looping features, especially when they already have apps that do video and audio editing that they're happy with. That would amount to bloatware, IMO.

BTW, not all video tracks have audio, like those cool new textures and backdrops that SoFo released recently. (A sampling is included in this month's Get Media feature in ACID Pro, including one that isn't watermarked, if anyone's interested.)

mD,

I posted this in the Vegas Forum, but got no replies.

I have a delta 1010 and would like to record absynth directly into a vegas track. I have been unsuccesful to record to a separate track while still monitoring other tracks (without latency). I would think I could route stand alone absynth via my delta, or at least route absynth anolgue out and back into the delta, but no luck. Is this possible?

thanks

jeff

Hmmm. Are you having problems trying to actually monitor while recording, with Absynth's latency, or both?

I imagine your latency problem stems from MIDI, which you'll have to adjust via the DMA Buffer Size option under the Hardware Settings tab in the Delta Control Panel.

HTH,
Iacobus
