a friend of mine sent some music that he did on an old roland sh101 to me on disc- i have successfully recorded a couple of things into acid 4.0 & looped them - only problem is that they were recorded onto 4 track cassette (probably) & are a bit high on the hiss & low on the frequency response- i have soundforge studio (the cheap one that comes bundled with acid) - my results are fair at best- is there a good way to reduce hiss & bring up the lows & highs with what i have? do i really need to look at the full version of sound forge? would just jacking with the eq & compression in acid be good enough? are there some good eq settings & compression ratios for dealing with my problem?

what you want to do is edit the wave files you got from your friend right?

therefore you need to use a wave editing program right?

soundforge is just one of many available. i get the best results from wavelab but for your situation, soundforge may do as long as you can use a noise reduction plugin or an audio/vinyl restoration plugin sofo makes these as well as a few other companies.

acid eq is a good start but what you really need is a real eq like waves q10. q10 has some presets that are optimized for cleaning up those poor recordings.

if you have the $, get the waves gold bundle http://www.waves.com/htmls/prods/indi/native_gold_bundle.html

if $ is a problem, get a cassette deck with dolby b or c and dub the cd onto a tape then run the tape w/dolby applied back into your recording app as if the tape is a live audio input.

I've had a similar problem with transfering cassettes to wav files. For me the noise reduction is the main issue, all though I did apply a little compression (dynamics)and I normalized to -1db. In order to use and DX effect you have to have the full versin of Sound Forge. SF has a well respected noise reduction plug-in but you would have to use it in Acid or buy the full version of Forge. The only other solution I have heard of is a program designed for transfering cassete to wav. I've heard of them but I can't name any. I did hear that Easy CD Creator 6 has a noise reduction plug-in.

With all of my rambling I think you can tell that I haven't reached a conclusion yet. I think I will end up buying the full Sound Forge with the Noise Reduction plug-in.

I'm interested! Do you use it? Does it work on wavs? Does it work on mp3s? It is a stand alone application, right?
