Subject:Saving a NTSC AVI file

Hi; I am sorry to have to appeal to the forum for something that support should have handled, but when I emailed for a clarification on a standard "Download the update, and read the FAQ's" answer, all I got was the same standard line. My question had been ingnored (both times). I had already done both before emailing. That being said, here is the problem: I imported a Video clip (standard type2 AVI Premiere DV NTSC .AVI file-NOT VIDEOP FOR WINDOWS). After editing sound file, I can't save it in any AVI file except Video for Windows .avi, which does not play in Premiere because format has changed (I am going to export the file to DV tape). If it can import the file, why can't I save it in the same format. I have spent a lot of time and energy on this, without success. Can anyone help? I have a Canopus DVStorm2 card, Scenalyzer, and Premiere 6.5. Thanks for any help. ANDREW |

What if you selected, "NTSC DV" as your template when saving as an AVI? Have you tried that? (I'm not too familiar with video, so...) Iacobus |

That is the problem. There is no dropdown menu for any other type of .avi file than video for windows. You cannot play or export to DV a Video for Windows file (although they list about 10 other types of files). ANDREW |

Wait. Did you use the "Template" option under the "Save As" dialog (with AVI chosen as file type, of course)? There's also a "Custom" button under the "Save As" dialog (right next to the template field) with a boatload of options. Did you check there? HTH, Iacobus |

I found nothing useful under custom (that is to say nothing worked that I tried), but I found the "template" option. I am not at my video computer at the moment to look, but this is what I thought when I first contacted Sonic Foundry (that there must be some way to get to Scenalyzer, Canopus or Premiere files to save, since that is where they came from) but got a canned answer. I went online and checked the manual. You still have to choose one of the "save as type" drop-down choices. You then can customize the changes you make such as NTSC-DV, but it saves it as a Windows Media File anyway. It doesn't export as a NTSC-DV file. However, I will give it one more look tonight. Thanks for your help. ANDREW |

Well Iacobus (I have no idea what HTH is), I may be ok. I did a quick open and save As another file name(without any changes)and applied your suggestions. I still was not able to change the "save as type" (it is still video for windows), using the template of NTSC-DV and it did not generate a .sfk file (probably because no changes were made). However, it said that the file was compressed even though the audio was uncompressed (I guess because the video IS compressed). In looking at the properties, it says that compression format is DV-SD which is different than the compression format of the original file (which escapes me at this time), and I will have to figure out what that means, and I don't know what will happen when I make changes to the audio file and it generates the .sfk file. As to the Video for Windows format, in Sound Forge, it plays only on the computer monitor, but the bottom line for now, is that when I tried to open it in Premiere 6.5, it did play out on my NTSC monitor, and is not in the video for windows format there. I will finish this topic when I have a definitive answer to my problem so we will have a full record of it in the forum. Again, thanks for your help. ANDREW |
