ok, ill just start. i had ACID 3.0 on Windows 98, then i upgraded to Windows XP and tried to reinstall ACID 3.0 and it wouldnt load.....so i got ACID 4.0, and installed it, and it didnt work. It would load but it wouldnt play anything. Then i got the Update for ACID 4.0b and it wont even load all the way! Can anyone help me figure out why, or how i can fix the problem. It worked when i had 3.0 and Windows 98, but not now with XP and 4.0b. Why? The splash screen comes up and i get an error message for acid.exe. Soundforge 5.0 and 6.0 both work, though. Anyone?

Does this help?

You might want to try also completely uninstalling ACID 4.0 and reinstall using the update (which is actually a full version; you need your serial key to activate it).

Make sure you've logged on to XP as administrator that's the ony way you can install new programs. If worst comes to worse make Acid compatible with Win 98, altho you shouldn't have to. Use your find files to make sure you've gotten rid of all traces of previous installs and start over fresh. You also have to setup your audio, in Acid preferences.

also, scan your system for viruses. i've had a similar experience when exe files suddenly didn't work anymore. turned out i was infected with the CIH virus and i had to reformat the entire drive.

When you move to XP, it handles IRQs differently and often tries sharing them. Most devices don't care, but audio and midi interfaces will crash when they share an IRQ (a concept somehow beyond Microsoft's comprehension). I wouldn't be surprised if after moving to XP you now had your audio card sharing an IRQ with a midi interface or something. Midi and audio sharing an IRQ for instance would crash windows when you tried to use them together. This would cause Acid to crash, but not Sound Forge. You can look at your device manager and see if any IRQs are now being shared. Unfortunately, Windows XP doesn't really let you reassign IRQs properly, but you can often juggle these by switching PCI card's slot positions.

Unless your card is "old technology" like my emagic AW2 is then IRQ sharing is out the window, but still workable...just with XP, make sure you're in "standard" then, NOT the default or you'll have probs again...

Thanks for everyones help! Ok, im always logged in as administrator, so i know thats not the problem. I have a new Soundblaster Live Platinum soundcard, so i dont think the IRQ sharing is the problem, but im cheking right now. RasKeita, you suggested that i search for older versions to get rid of all traces of the old install, how do i do that exactally? I always uninstall and then just get rid of the folder. I know theres files put into the windows directory, but what files? Im scanning for viruses too, so maybe that will work. But everything else has failed! Im sad:( Thanks for everyones help. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Interesting that you are getting many suggestions, and yet we don't even know what error you are getting! What's the error message you are seeing?

Jim
