I've uploaded a couple of creations to Acid Planet (in Jazz/Fusion if anyone's interested), but I noticed that the majority of songs there are composed of people using Acid to mix pieces made up of live recordings. There are very few pieces composed of loops.

I'm curious as to how many people are using Acid to create music made up of only loops and how many are using loops for backup or not at all.

My personal method of composing songs is to use whatever I feel like using. Some of my songs are composed entirely of loops. Some are done with “real” instruments. And then some are made up of both. I’ve had loops inspire me to get a song going, and then ended up playing various instrument on the rest of the song. I think it tends to shift with what the majority does. I’ll say that there are more people on Acid Planet using “real” instruments than there were a year ago. Write your songs however you want. The trick with loops it to try and not make it sound like you're using loops. Not as easy as it sounds. Some people will without a doubt criticize you for using loops. Funny that the same people are posting songs on a site originally designed for loop based creations. As far as I know, Sonic Foundry doesn’t sell instruments. I think those people should stay away from Acid Planet and head over to MP3.com if they dislike loop based music. There’s enough room on the internet for everybody. Bottom line when it comes to music: If it sounds good, then it’s good. How you get from here to there doesn’t matter. Don’t let anybody tell you different. I'm Acid Hack on AP. Go check out some songs to see what I'm talking about.

the trick is to use acid to loop your own creations and make foundations of them.

Greetings Jim,

I will start by saying I am not a musician, but someone who all my life has had a passionate affair with music.

My ultimate ambition is to own and run a studio as a producer, which will allow me to let actual musicians to ply their trade whilst I work with them to create something that has sonic integrity.

That will probably never happen (I'm no spring chicken although we do have one thing in common - scratch) but that has stopped me working towards that goal. For me, Acid (and when I can afford to make another purchase, Vegas) is a practice tool on which I can learn the basics of mixing and mastering techniques. Obviously it's a bit difficult to be a producer if you have nothing to 'produce', so I use loops to create a track which I can practice on.

I'm (slowly) expanding my set up and plan to record various instruments and vocals, so I will be using 'live' tracks at some point but as I already said, I am not a musician and don't really have any plans to become one.

You can check out what I've achieved so far at the following link if you're interested:

Jazz tends to be more free flowing rather than just lopp-based, but you can use loops for jazz and just play over it. Or you can cut up jazz licks and loop them. Check out the BWB remix contest. Also look at acid jazz.

Acid is a looping tool. It is optimized for looping, and not for other kinds of recording. It serves me well, and I use it as a professional. I have a degree in music and I use loops all the time. Loops are just an instrument. So go ahead and loop away!
