Hello everyone, I'm new to this board. I normally work with video and photographs, but I'm taking on a new type of project with an associate. She will be conducting audio interviews with clients (can be about any subject, to attach to a will or to tell life stories to pass along to children, for example). It will be my job to get them onto disk (CD or DVD, depending on the type of project the client wants). These audio recordings are taken with a Marantz professional analogue tape recorder, but there is a slight background noise (fuzz). Can I remove this with my Sound Forge XP 4.5, or do I need to upgrade? I am able to do some basic editing, but I can't seem to get rid of the background noise. Is this because it's not possible with this program, or is it because I'm not sure of what I'm doing? Also, is it worth continuing to work with her analogue tape deck, or should she invest in a Sony mini disk recorder? Is the quality good enough for this purpose? I know it's not my computer equipment, I'm running a pentium 4 with WinXP, 1GB Ram, 140GB hard drive, a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card, and an ATI All in Wonder video card. Thank you so much for your help. It is greatly appreciated. Cheerio! |

I think you need to upgrade to be able to use DX plugins for noise reduction. Any chance or recording straight into the computer ? A MiniDisc, DAT, or laptop with SForge may be better for location work, though most laptops' mic inputs are pretty crappy. geoff |

The Marantz cassette recorder should be adaquate. You need a proper microphone and some instructions on how to use that and the recorder, be it cassette or MD. I would suggest a lavilere mic for your application. |

SF 4.5 (XP) is an older version. It has no dx inputs. The latest V6 Sound Forge is a lot quicker to use. Also a portable MD is very handy to use. No moving around a computer, just a small MD that will fit in your pocket. When you finish recording take the MD to your computer, copy your voice into the computer, and if you have a crash in computer you still have your MD , have a look at SF v6. it has a lot of add on type of programmes that 4.5 doesnt. |

Thank you to all of you for your input. I think my "collaborator" will be sticking with the Marantz for now, mostly since even if she has a MD, I still need her equipment to get it into my computer. If we were dealing with mini CDs, it would be a different story. We actually managed to filter the noise out by bringing it into my computer through the software that came with our sound card. The background noise is filtered out AS it's being transfered from analogue to digital. It took a lot of it out, and I was able to cut out any little clicks & pops using SF. It now sounds professional enough to hand off to the client. Thanks again for your help, Cheerio |

The only concern with using a laptop is the background noise. How quiet can they get? |
