seems everybody is doing it a little different, but i heard you should keep live tracks on a seperate drive from loops and audio files. and if you have to, you should keep the loops and audio files (not the live tracks) on the drive with the os and acid program. is this right or am i misunderstanding? the way i have it now is, the c drive has windows and acid on one partition and on the second partition i keep the loops and sample library, then on the second hard drive i use that to record and store the live tracks that i record into acid... is this cool? thanks for everybodys help. |

Should be fine, especially if you haven't had any problems, but just note that you might be better off keeping all the media (loops, sample libraries, and recorded tracks) on the second drive. The drive with the media should be also the top performer of the two drives (if you had to choose). A 7200 RPM drive is recommended. HTH, Iacobus |

not only for performance sake, but also data safety. if you keep mission critical data on your o/s drive, that data is at risk because of several reasons. here are a few: 1. o/s drive is in constant use and will have a shorter lifespan. dead drive=no data access. 2. windows will crash eventually and your data may go along with it. 3. o/s drives suffer from fragmentation and so will your data. i'm sure someone else can add to the list. if you have 2 or more drives, always keep data on a drive that does not contain installed software. its the first step in covering your a** and saving you from data loss nightmares. who knows, perhaps someday you may want to use that data in another computer. having it on a seperate drive makes it easy to transport to/from machines. |

see i thought that i read that audio loops should be seperate from live recorded tracks because the drive has to search around less to pull all of the media? i read this on sound on sound... this is what he said, (but he is talking about 2 different programs but i thought that it might be the same for acid...)he says... "If you run GigaStudio or HALion, you don't really want your streaming audio library on the same drive as your recorded audio tracks: this will degrade performance of them both, as the read/write heads are thrashing about from one part of the drive to the other. However, with two drives, the only alternative is to place your library on a dedicated partition on your Windows drive. Although not a perfect solution, this is what I've done as in practice, the Windows partition is unlikely to be accessed very often by your MIDI + Audio sequencer, as long as you have sufficient RAM installed to avoid the swap file being accessed"... here's the link... http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/apr02/articles/pcmusician0402.asp please let me know what you guys think... thanks |
