Subject:Best audio tool for video projects

I am starting to score music and sound effects for video projects and use both SONAR 2.2 and ACID Pro version 4. Both can import video files, but SONAR offers a wider variety of video file types than ACID, while I feel ACID is more effective for this type of project for a few reasons.

First, I like being able to view individual frames in the track view which allows me to better synch sound effects to the video. I also like ACID's loop explorer tool better.

So what's the problem? The problem is that the video files created for me can get very large; even when sized smaller and compressed. For example, I was just given a 320x240 Quicktime file (220MB) which causes ACID and SONAR to crash. After several attemtps, I was finally given an MPEG 2 file (.mv2) which was 165 MB. SONAR can handle .mv2 files but ACID can't.

What is the best tool to use for this type of audio project? My end product will be a .WAV file which the video editor can import into their application - AVID or iFinish.

Thanks,
Robert

Thanks, but I really don't need any video editing capability. I just need to be able to load very large Quicktime or AVI files.

I take it you only need these video files for reference when scoring?

What about other formats like MP2 and WMV? (You'll need to purchase the MainConcept plug-in to open MPEG-2 files in ACID.) Strange that Quicktime files make both SONAR and ACID crash.

Yes, I only need these video files for reference while scoring. I'm surprized as well that Quicktime is crashing ACID, but perhaps 200+ MB is too much for it. Do you know much about video compression?

Thanks,
Robert

Not too much, but I do remember working with QuickTime and MPEG-1 and 2 files just fine (though they weren't too big). Have you tried downloading the latest version of QuickTime? (Make sure you install the full rather than the minimal installation.)

That's really, really odd-- I run .avi files all the time without issue in Acid Music 3.0. I tried it just now to make sure-- I was running a file well over a gig and a half without issue. Maybe it's a quicktime problem...

David.
