Subject:24 Bit in SF 6.0 (ASIO support ?)

I just read a thread which mentioned that, Vegas oand ACID are unable to record 24bit files with WDM drivers in win XP. Now since Sound Forge will not accept ASIO drivers, only wdm. What happens when I open 24bit files in Sound Forge for editting? Do they retain thier 24bit data and quality or do they revert to 16 bit ? Will there ever be asio support for Sound Forge ? - Paul |

i'm not sure what you mean. i have an Audiophile 2496, and i'm using the Delta Multichannel drivers in SF 6.0d. i open and edit files in 24 bit all the time, and it works without a glitch. so i would say it's definitely supported by the software. |

If the sound card does not support 24-bit playback for whatever reason, playback will be knocked down to 16-bit. The Format tab in File->Properties (Alt+Enter) will indicate the native, processing, and playback bit-depth for a given file. ASIO support is being evaluated for Sound Forge 7.0. J. |

I was making reference to the following statement made by a Sonic Foundry employee on the Vegas board. I use a Motu 2408MKII and am just making sure that I am getting true 24 bit audio in Sound Forge. I am using asio for vegas and acid. _____________________________________________________________________________________ "This is caused by WDM based audio drivers that don't support 24 bit packed audio format. What happens is that Vegas attempts to open the driver in 24 bit packed mode using what is called WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE. This request goes to the WDM driver. If it says to Windows "Nope, can't do that" Windows will then try other formats. Windows does not try 24 bit unpacked - 24 bits in a 32 bit word. Instead, Windows opens the driver at 16 bits. Vegas is told everything is fine. It assumes it will get 24 bit data and Windows just feeds it 16 bit data. This problem effects all versions of ACID and Vegas. We will be addressing this issue only for Vegas 4.0 and ACID 4.0. For previous versions of our products, you will have to get the driver vendors to support 24 bit packed audio. Peter" _____________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks for clarification, Paul |

I recently added a Digigram VXPocket which has WDM drivers, to my Sony Notebook, XPPro-SF6. Prior to that I battled endlessly trying to get ASIO driver for Apogee Mini-Me to work consistently, without success. This makes me wonder . . since SF6 supports WDM now, what would be benefit of ASIO over WDM ? Rick Z |
