Subject:STRAIGHT UP - LATENCY - BUFFERING ETC.

I already have Acid Pro 4.0 and have have been using it... I have a fast computer and a killer sound card. I have 256K of memory, which seems sufficient and I'm using a separate hard drive for storing files. The memory display at the bottom of the Acid 4.0 window reads that it is using 9/256 K on a project that has 6 audio tracks, once I go to record another track somewhere around 6 or 7 audio tracks, the latency begins even when the program & project is only using 9/256 of memory. This has happened on numerous projects as I get to know Acid more and more. I have had to create a new wave file from the 6 tracks and then copy that wave file into a new Acid project to add additional tracks to what I previously recorded trying to avoid latency problems, of course, until I get to around 6 or 7 tracks then I have to repeat the exercise of creating a new .wave and new file to add more tracks. Now somewhere within Sonic Foundry I actually read that Acid isn't made to run more than two extended length tracks, but I don't remember where exactly and if this is the case. Am I stupid here or is it a necessary evil to have to get to know how to use the buffers to avoid latency? I thought latency was caused by lack or memory when adding to a project, yet I have just oodles of memory that I even take some with me to to wipe my ass with when I take a break from Assid. No offense, I actually like it, but the latency I'm puzzled by on my computer.

Straight Up - Describe your "fast machine" and "killer sound card" so we can look at this closer. Latency is a complex topic and has pretty much nothing to do with physical memory.

Well, it seems like everyone has latency issues no matter what kind of system they are using... I've gone back and looked at various other postings and it's obviously a common thing. the fact of the matter is I don't have latency problems with the first 5 or 6 tracks. I am using a Digi PCXpocket V3 on a Dell Inspiron Laptop 60GB2 harddrive with Pentium 4 Processor-M at 2.0GHz-M, plus the new Intel 845MP chipset, which allows the Processor Support Bus to run at 400MHz. NEW Double Data Rate (DDR) system memory doubles clock speeds to 266MHz. Up to 1GB system memory is supported, which is ideal for intensive tasks such as gaming and video editing. ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 Video Card with 64MB of memory. Cutting-edge NVIDIA® GeForce4 440 GoTM with 32MB of DDR video memory. Thanks... any recommendations?

1) What OS are you using? XP,Win me,etc...
2) Digi PCXpocket V3...What is that? Could you post a link? What driver version?
3)How many hard drives are you running? ie: Do you have one for your system OS and one for your audio files? What are they rated at? ie:5400rpm or 7200rpm
4) What other software do you have installed AND running in the background with acid?
5) Did you buy this dell laptop as a packaged deal? ie: It came with a OS installation disk that installed a bunch of extra crap you don't need.
6) Do you have the latest ATI video card drivers?
7) Did the dell come with a soundcard built into the motherboard? ie: possible irq conflict between that and the digi.
8) Did you do any tweaks to your system that we should know about before we commit to giving you any suggestions? ie: did you disable anything or modify the OS in any way.

Next time you post your specs don't make it a sales pitch just the facts. Easier for me to wade through.

The more I read about Patrick, the more I'm inclined to believe that the information we're seeing from him is not accurate. His system specs change from post to post, and this one is copied and pasted right from the Dell Web site!

It sure LOOKS like someone just trying to stir up trouble. :)

yeah, you can't have the ati AND the nvidia graphics chipset. it's one or the other.

ignore this guy, he's full of sh*t.
