First DVD Won't Burn! (HP200i)

kentwolf wrote on 2/24/2003, 2:56 PM
Now that I actually bought Vegas+DVD, I cannot burn a DVD.

I am using an HP200i, DVD+RW media.

I have never had problems burning anything.

I have settings to 4.7 GB media, just a small, sample progect. 2% of the disk.

I do have the below message...

'SFMMCX'-(17)
'atapi'-(1)
-'HP DVD Writer 200j 1.36'-(0)
Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1158
The command completed successfully.
No sense.

Status: 00000000

Info: 00 00 00 00
Specific: 00 00 00
Extra:

It says that all was successful, however, the DVD still contains my old Pinnacle project(s). The actual burning is not taking place.

I have the latest firmware version installed, v 1.51.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...the sooner the better!

Thanks!

Even after upgrading to firmware 1.51, the DVD will not record.

The DVD content folder contain valid data (as per test wioth WinDVD), but it will not rewrite a DVD-RW disk.

Is there a fix on the way for this?

Pretty disappointing after just buying this program.

Thanks.

I just called Sonic Foundry tech support and they said:

1.) They were not aware of a problem rewiting a DVD+RW disk with an HP 200i DVD drive.

2.) After the guy came back on the line he said that they, Sonic FOundry, are aware that this is an issue and they are working on a resolution. He did not have a time-frame for this fix nor did he know of a workaround.

...straight from the horses mouth...

Thank you.

This is an issue that we've been trying to solve. But, so far, I haven't gotten a good repro of the problem.

The disc that is giving you issues . . . what program (with version number if you can) was last used to burn to the disc? Roughly, how full is the disc?
This error seems to go away if you use a fresh +RW disc. You also might want to try 'erasing' the disc with another application, then try to burn in DVD Arch.

If there are still problems, please email me and we will work on this some more.

Thanks,
Dave

>>what program (with version number if you can) was last used to burn to the disc?

Pinnacle Studio 8, and lastly, Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum (With DVD capabilities). Both burn just fine.

>>Roughly, how full is the disc?

Sometimes a couple hundred meg, other times, 0% full.

>>This error seems to go away if you use a fresh +RW disc.

I do not have any that have not been written to. The purpose of the RW, at least for me, is to test before writing to a R disk.

>>You also might want to try 'erasing' the disc with another application, then try >>to burn in DVD Arch.

I tried to do exactly this.

>>If there are still problems, please email me and we will work on this some more.

I would be glad to, however, I do not know where to e-mail to... I would be glad to do whatever I can to help remedy this issue. As I said, I have asolutely no trouble burning anything else with any other app; just with DVD Architect. I have systems backed in Drive Image files, so I can install and try any patch, update, beta, etc. with no long-term ramifications.

Thank you.

Update: I actually had a Maxell Disk DVD+RW disk that worked. I do not know what was previously on it, but nenetheless, it worked. I then tried to duplicate this feat with an HP disk and a Phillips, which did not work. On these failed burns, it doesn't get past the "Burning Lead In." After doing this, it races to the end of the burning process and tells me it was burned successfully.

kentwolf,

I had a problem with burning previously written to +RWs as well on my HP DVD200i. I upgraded my firmware, but that doesn't make me think it won't happen again the next time I try it. I honestly haven't tried it again since upgrading my firmware. I will tomorrow when I am not half a sleep!

On thing that I know for sure is that +R media works great with DVDA. If you are in a bind you might want to use this instead of +RW until the bug is fixed.

Sonic_DaveS,

The bug appeared on my system when I used a fuji DVD+RW disc and used the RecordNow software to erase the DVD prior to attempting to burn my movie in DVDA.

My firmware version was 1.36 when it crashed my system and I haven't tried a +RW since upgrading to 1.51.

I don't know if this info will help, but it is what happened on my PC.

Here is my system:

System Manufacturer: Dell Computer Corporation
System Model: Dimension 8200
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1700MHz

Thanks Kentwolf and Company - your detective skills gives us something to check out WRT Pinnacle.

Good job!

I just tried to burn a never before used DVD+RW with Architect and I got same error.

This was a blank "hp dvd+rw" disk fresh out of the box that came with my HP dvd300i burner. The project is about 20 minutes video with a few menus. I have already "successfully" burned two DVD+R with this project. (I put "successfully" in quotes, because these DVD+R's only successfully play intermittently on my system (I don't have a set top player to try out)).

So anyway, my repro is:
1) Use HP dvd300i burner
2) Try to burn onto fresh dvd+rw
