Opinions after first use

I've tried a number of other authoring tools, and I was most happy with Ulead's DVD Workshop. It used a non-standard but easy-to-use interface. I like DVD Architect, but there is room for improvement.

First a few "bugs" to fix:

1. Sometimes it fails to overwrite a DVD+RW that contains data. It says it finished, but nothing is written. Clean DVD+RWs never have this problem.

2. I'm losing about 1-2 seconds of the video/audio tracks when my menus include them. They preview fine, but when I play the disc created by DVD Architect it jumps into the clip about 1-22 seconds from the true beginning.

Some enhancements to the interface are needed. Here are my top 10:

1. My biggest wish: DVDA desperately needs something similar to DVD Workshop's "Attribute copy/paste" feature. A HUGE time saver. Define the attributes for ONE object, them easily copy them to other objects. I've been swearing at how time-consuming it is to modify multiple objects in DVD Architect.

2. What's with this "Auto" text sizing. Is there a way to lock the size to a specific point size and then modify the envelop size? When I drag the envelope handles, too far, the font decreases in size. Again, an attribute copy/paste would fix this.

3. Alignment tool seems very inexact.

4. A "nudge" tool using the keyboard is needed when you wish to move an object a very small amount. The mouse is too coarse and the X/Y coordinates too slow.

5. A way to lock or group an link image with its text so they don't accidentally get misaligned.

6. Remember the zoom level that I was using when I was setting up chapter points when I return to that view. It always returns to full zoom out level.

7. Grid settings need to be finer -- too coarse now

8. Provide a way to create a link object BEFORE creating a chapter point, then link the object to a newly created chapter point. In other words, add an object to an existing scene selection menu, them modify where it points. Currently, it works the other way 'round.

9. Simplify the steps needed to change the thumbnail image for a chapter. Take a look at DVD Workshop.

10. Provide an outline rectangle envelope for indicating which object has focus. Better yet, provide a way to create a custom envelope, e.g., modify the line thickness, shadowing, etc.

Did you submit these suggestions to the product suggestion page? I'd like to see some of these features too.

4. A "nudge" tool using the keyboard is needed when you wish to move an object a very small amount. The mouse is too coarse and the X/Y coordinates too slow.

This one is already there - CTRL-ALT-Arrow will allow fine movements using the keyboard in any direction. (I stumbled across this one by accident)

5. A way to lock or group an link image with its text so they don't accidentally get misaligned.

When moving items with the ARROW tool instead of the SIZING tool, the DO remain locked together.

7. Grid settings need to be finer -- too coarse now

Options - Grid Settings. Put in whatever grid size you want.

8. Provide a way to create a link object BEFORE creating a chapter point, then link the object to a newly created chapter point. In other words, add an object to an existing scene selection menu, them modify where it points. Currently, it works the other way 'round.

I'm not sure what you mean by this one.

9. Simplify the steps needed to change the thumbnail image for a chapter. Take a look at DVD Workshop.

There are multiple ways to do this:
A. Type in the timecode number in the "Thumbnail Start Time" box on the Object Properties page.
B. Use the "slider" on the "Thumbnail Start Time" box on the Object Properties page.
C. Double-click the link, move the cursor to the proper place on the timeline, and click on the "Set Menu Item Thumbnail" button OR press "T".

This should at least resolve a few of your problems.

1. Define the attributes for ONE object, them easily copy them to other objects.

You could customize a theme.

2. Is there a way to lock the size to a specific point size and then modify the envelop size?

Setting the font size on the Text Bar works as expected for me.

3. Alignment tool seems very inexact.

Rectangles surrounding images are aligned, not the images themselves. As long as the rectangles are the same size the images will align correctly.

4. A "nudge" tool using the keyboard is needed when you wish to move an object a very small amount.

See http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=155438&Page=0. This shortcut isn't listed with the others in the help file though.

7. Grid settings need to be finer -- too coarse now

Objects can still be snapped and nudged according to the true grid spacing but the grid itself isn't drawn as expected.

9. Simplify the steps needed to change the thumbnail image for a chapter.

I don't know DVD Workshop but changing the thumbnail seems extremely straightforward to me (whichever of the methods one uses).

P.S. JetDV has just beaten me to some of this. Apologies to all for anything redundant.

Thanks for the input. Here are some comments:

4. Nudge tool -- THANKS

5. I'll try the arrow tool.

7. Sorry, I assumed this was a bug, as the viewable grid was so strange in its behavior. I'll try again.

8. I'd like to be able to create an object on the menu, then link it to a chapter point. Simple idea -- create object, select "Create Link" (like web page design), then locate the frame and link the two. This might be a subjective view, but it seems completely non-intuitive to have to plan out all of your chapter points in advance. Sometimes that process works, and sometimes it gets in the way.

This issue, like the thumbnail issue, comes from the interface design. There are completely separate views for the menu composition vs. the media timeline. You need to keep switching back and forth between views. DVD-A exacerbates this as a problem because the zoom level on the timeline resets itself every time you change views. A way to view the timeline in any of the "editing" views would solve most of this.

I don't mean to sound like a DVD Workshop sales rep. I bought DVD-A to improve upon the DVD Workshop tool, and I guess I had higher hopes than my experience thus far has provided. Here are somethings that please me about DVD :

1. Zooming of timeline matches the method in Vegas Video, which I like due to its precision. This is a major improvement.

2. Preview of motion menus is much better.

3. DVD Workshop MAKES you step through a capture step, even if you are using pre-rendered video (just dumb, but irritating)

4. Sonic Foundry's tech support is far superior to Ulead's, although just about anything (except ATI!) would be superior to Ulead's.

5. When determining a folder location to save your files, DVD-A's file dialogs work like regular Windows file dialogs. In DVD Workshop, you need to make sure the folder pre-exists, as you cannot create one from the dialog (nitpick).

By the way, what ARE those envelopes (or rectangles) that surround the text? Are they only there to let you know the size of the highlight when navigating around the clips?

Also, let me voice a wish for the text editing tool to be changed to bring it into compliance with every other grpahics editing program I've ever used, where double-clicking on the text object opens it up for editing.

Thanks for the suggestions:

1. I looked into that, and themes appear to be intended to spend some time setting up a RE-USABLE format. They take quite a bit of work to customize. I usually create a new look for each DVD, so that really doesn't help me. The Copy/Paste Attributes feature of DVD Workshop works a lot like the Format Painter in Microsoft Office. Get one object how you likt it, then copy the formatting to other objects. Fast and easy.

2. If I set a point size of an object to 14, then try to resize the text "envelope" (whatever that thing is called), eventually the font size switches to "Auto" and I've lost my sizing.

3. Your point about the rectangles (envelopes?) bolsters my comment about the object attribute tool. I guess I'm missing the value of the envelope. I only see it as the highlight for the object when naviagting around the scene selection menu. Am I missing some higher prupose? If that is its role, it seems that maintianing font setings and alingment of the TEXT is far more important than the highlight.

4. Thanks for the tip.

7. Yes, I see that the I was being confused by the viewable grid. However, the concept of "Snap To Grid" loses some appeal if the viewable grid can't represent your grid spacing accurately.

9. This is where a view of the timeline that spanned all menus would simplify things. It's easier to show you than explain. DVD Workshop's inteface could stand improvement as well, but having the timeline visible to the menu, and then linking the thumbnail to the chapter point, rather than to the object, seems to make more sense. Whatever, in practice it is much faster. However, DVD Architect's (Vegas Video's) timeline is far superior to the one in DVD Workshop (IMHO).

#4). "NUDGE TOOL" = [Ctrl] + [Alt] + left arrow, right arrow, up arrow, down arrow.

My experience with DVD A so far has been one filled with frustration. If I didn't need to have an AC-3 track on this project, I would have given up long ago and gone back to using DVD Complete.

Clearly, this product was released before its time. It is excessively buggy (18 Gig project size for a 3.9 Gig mpeg + a 1.3 gig AC-3 file), totally inflexible and lacking in capabilities. About the only thing going for it right now is the AC-3 support and even that is lacking in flexibility. For example, why only 2 channel or 5.1 channel? Didn't it occur to someone that a user (me) might want to author a 4.0 or even a 5.0 sound track?

Sorry, Someone had to say it, and I sure hope that 1.1 addresses at least the AC-3 restrictions, not to mention providing support for frame rates other than 25 or 29.97 fps.

The grid starts "removing" grid lines when they get too close together. Otherwise, all you'd see if grid lines and no workspace. This is by design. However, we may investigate other ways of removing grid lines, by making them more transparent or via a user preference.

As for the text size. It only changes your text size to "auto" if you resize the text size smaller than it is. For instance, it doesn't make much sense to say "Text Size: 36" if what you are viewing is a text size of 16.

I wasn't sure if this is what you were referring to, but the little squares in corners of the objects (when using the resize tool) are to show which object has focus (yellow), and which ones are selected (white). When you have a bunch of objects selected in this tool, a simple bounding box isn't good enough (objects in the middle may not be selected)

Thanks for all the suggestions. We appreciate them.

Hi,

I'm just cruising here to see what is up with this app before checking it out and I must reply to the comment that:

>not to mention providing support for frame rates other than 25 or 29.97 fps.

No other frame rate is supported by the DVD Spec so why would you want any other frame rate? You can not make a DVD with anything other than 25 or 29.97. Cheers to SF for jumping into the DVD game :)

Good Luck,

What if there was an option to NOT LET the font size change? For example, if I type in that I want 18 point text, why let me resize the box smaller than the 18 will fit in at all? Bigger - yes (but leave it at 18 point). Smaller - no. For some purposes, I LIKE the auto size and would like it to remain. However, if I select a specific size, why can't it stay at that size?
tvdias wrote on 2/21/2003, 1:11 PM
caldvd: I guess you better tell that to all the companies who author DVD movies. :)

P. S. Don't confuse the source frame rate with the video refresh rate.

Just for grins, open up VV's project properties and check out all the available frame rates. 23.976 is listed as IVTC film.

Yes! And that is what I have been trying to do. Make a 24P DVD.
Do I need a $15,000 program to accomplish this. Everyone's
talk of TMPEG doing a flagged 23.976 does not make any sense.
I have tried it and it looks horrible.

Gee I almost feel guilty after reading all these posts. I got 4 +dvd and do video copying like taking a tape of someons wedding and making it into a DVD. I also do origional shows of singers and bands. I have yet to have a problem and these boards are much help. So I san't say anything but thanks for a great product.

Well.... my first try with DVDA I got a coaster. I've been reading here that some people are using Nero to burn the files prepaired by DVDA so I thought I'd give that a try. Nero 'says' that the block size is wrong and won't even try to burn the disc. So I figured that I'd start over (re-rendered in V4 new DVDA etc.). Now DVDA won't even 'prepair' the file(s)... I get a warning that says something to the effect "Unable to write file 0xabcdefg. Unknown Message". What ?

I love SoFo and over the years have come to expect a certain rock 'solidness' from them but for me DVDA just isn't gettin' it. I hope the update/patch that has been mentioned in some of the other threads will resolve these problems.

I too love Vegas etc, but I have now used this app and are somewhat dissapointed. I created my project, I understand the audio recompression etc, but I am frustrated by several small but important tech issues.

The text is blurry/blocky on all my DVD players (4 of..), not up to the quality of Ulead DVD MF2.

One of my DVD players will not play any selection, no highlighting, yet DVD MF2 and DVD Complete are OK for the same project.

Seems to be a slight amount of flickering on the menus text and thumbnails, again DVD MF2 is perfect (DVD complete has this problem, but worse).

Navigation from scene select menus always back to the root menu, DVD MF stays in the scene selection menu after returning from playing a scene selection ( DVD complete suffers from this too).

I really want to use this app, its the only one that let me create the DVD the way I want, e.g. one large Mpeg file, submenus, scene selection menus, text only selections etc, but at the moment I have to use Ulead DVD MF as it does all those small things right, but with less creativity. DVD Complete suffers as well.

So.....please address these issues, as I feel the potential is definetly there.
