I have plenty of space on my harddrive but can i bring in 2 hrs worth of audio in
continuously?have a radio show i want to take in and make a wav file to take out to cd.
im having a problem getting it to record. when i play the tape, the play meters dont move.
only when i hit record does a smaller box come up that shows green level meters. one on right isnt moving at all and one on left is barely moving.when i save this and play it back/nothing..anysuggestions appreciated.
getting me the exact steps would be great.
im editing on the canopus rexrt ssytem.

Jim,
It should work. I haven't tried 2+ hour in Sound Forge, but I frequently record 90 minutes of audio. Remember that one CD can hold a max of 74 or 80 minutes, depending on what you buy.

I normally specify the total recording time to a little more than I need, then come back to save the file, after it is finished.

If you just monitor, can you see/hear the program?

Like Jim said, your CD max is 80mins, I was having the exact same problem that you describe, and it turned out to be a cable problem, my dog pulled on the cables under my recording console, and I wasn't quite making a connection to the back of my computer. Or your cables could be bad, try switching left and right around and see if the other meter works?..Greg

i can record 3hr and 22min...i have a queston posted asking how can i record longer because i have a 40 gb drive which is wasted..i can only record this much at a time..
BUT....i got help...if i format my HD to NTFS i can use it all...

WRT the metersnot moving . It sounds like you have several problems:
1- Your plug may not be firmly inserted into your soundcard - or the playing device is mono or broken.
2 - The input on your soundcard mixer applet may not be fully enabled, or the level is set too low
3 - You may not have selected the correct 'recording' device in the Preferences or record dialogue.

does anyone know if it's possible to record longer than two or three hours? there's a radio show that comes on a few hours after i leave for work. i have plenty of hard drive space to record all day long, but Sound Forge automatically cuts off the recording after a couple hours.

The recording cuts off when the file reaches a filesize limit set by the OS file system. For 'unlimited' filesize (and recording length) try converting to NTFS if on Win2K or XP.

I regularly record six hours non-stop, so it can be done! The trick is to sacrifice audio quality - in my case I'm recording a particular programme from a web feed - it's a mono, 20Kb/s feed anyway, so the source is not great quality to start with.

Open the record dialog, and hit New (next to Recording Attributes.) In Channels switch to mono. You've just doubled the maximum time you can record.....

Now drop the sample rate to 22,050 and you've doubled your maximum time again. Switch it to 11,025 and you've quadrupled it....

Not only will you increase the maximum time you can record (without necessarily switching to NTFS) but editing, if you need to do it, will be quicker.

It's your call regarding at what point the quality is acceptable.

I mainly use SF for voice recording, with one studio mike, for voiceover work - you'd be amazed how many people in this field record a mono source in stereo! (And are thus working with files twice the size they need to be...)

Yes you can record more than 3 hours. And it does depend on your sample rate. And, although the disk can limit your time, there is a limit as to how large a file you can save even with "unlimited" disk. That seems to be (from experiment) about 2GB. That gives me about 4.5 hours at 32K sampling, or twice as much for 32K monaural or 16K stereo, etc.

Now the nasty trick is, with the new SF 6.0, you can record even more than you can save. Like when you leave the system recording overnight and come back--it looks like it has recorded 8 hours or so and gives you a beautiful picture of a wave form. But woe unto you if you try to save it--I forget exactly what it does, but I got an error that destroyed the whole file. Its OK to record 8 hours, though, if you cut enough material off the file to restrict it to less than a 2GB file before you try to save it. Then the shortened file will still save properly.
