Subject:acid causes system to crash

I have recently installed an audigy mp3+ soundcard that came with an acid clone called mixmeister 3. Last weekend I installed acid 3.0 and when I play a sound file large or small, my system locks up and I have to hold power for 4 seconds to turn off the computer.

I have a celeron 766 (powerleap slotket upgrade; originally pentium 233) with 256 mb ram, so it should have enough power to run these sound files.

Are there any common causes for this problem?

I am thinking maybe a problem with audigy configuration, a software conflict, or sometimes the powerleap upgrade can cause havoc.

Could be a multitude of causes. Check to see if updated drivers are available for the Audigy MP3+. Might want to also update the drivers to your video card.

Be sure to also install drivers properly. Some require that you actually uninstall a previous driver before installing the new one.

The less you have in your system when it comes to hardware and software, the better off you will be down the road.

If all else fails, seriously consider formatting your system, especially if you haven't done so in awhile. Windows bloat can cripple a system from operating at its best.

Some Creative cards have caused issues with certain chipsets as well. In addition to what mD said, you may also want to look into flashing your system's BIOS.

Also, from in ACID, are you using MS Mapper, or the classic wave drivers? Does WMP play files all right?

I use classic wave drivers, not ms mapper and am interested in what the difference is. I believe I am using a current BIOS. I looked at updating acid files, but it was 25mb and i have a 56k connection and not much time to spare.

installing the sound card's software was a major hastle, it did not go as the manual said it would... i was forced to do a bit of a hack job on it. Perhaps I will chat with creative about this problem.

thanks for the suggestions

updated the drivers for acid + soundcard, uninstalled some software and the problem still happens. BIOS is updated and I defragged the system.

Creative has not responded to any of my emails, neither has sonic foundry.

Anything else this could be?

Uninstalling software (or hardware drivers) does not guarantee the problem will go away, as there is still residue in the Registry that can cripple Windows' performance.

Try booting in Safe Mode and then reboot in normal mode. Going into Safe Mode will sometimes shake any bugs from your system (metaphorically speaking, of course).
