Subject:Acid 4.0b Build 317 Startup takes way too long...

I have been working with ACID tech support to resolve a problem that I am having, so far to no avail. I have tried everthing suggested and thought I would bring this to the forum again to see if anyone has been having a similar problem and may have found a solution.

I have a HP Pavilion with a Celeron 500mhz. (I will never buy another HP by the way.)
ACID takes FOREVER to start-up. It works perfectly once it is going except for this one very annoying problem. The only thing that seems to shorten the time is to start another copy. Sonicfoundry claims that no one else has reported this problem, yet their tech people seem at a loss to explain with the problem is...I would appreciate any help, any suggestions that anyone might have.

Thanks.

Exactly how long does it take? How much RAM does the system have? The less RAM there is, the longer the program will take to load.

On top of that, Celerons really weren't meant for intensive tasks such as multimedia like audio and video. They were more suited for menial tasks such as word processing and browsing the Internet.

Did you try the suggestions you got last time? I was going to suggest disabling net notify and disabling the splash screen, but you've already had that suggested. Any help?
The other thing I was going to mention was a defrag, but again, since this problem is 4 months old, I doubt that's the problem.
Why don't you list what you've tried, that way it'll be easier to nail down.

Just thought of something... Is it possible you have an anti-virus installed and configured to scan programs when you open them? If so, you might want to disable that.

I have 256M and the start-up is about 2 - 3minutes or more.

As far as the "menial" Celeron is concerned. I also run Logic Audio 4.8.1 and Reason 1.0, except for trying to run 24 bit recording on Logic they work fine.

That's way too long.

As MyST mentioned, is there anything running in the background? (Antivirus, firewalls, instant messengers, etc.) Any other hardware installed? (Scanners, printers, etc.) The less that's installed (hardware and/or software), the better.

Consider also reformatting, especially if it's been awhile. ACID may just be more sensitive to Windows bloat than other software.

Bad RAM maybe??
One thing is for sure, this isn't typical, so it's system specific.
Which version of Windows are you running?
With 500 Mhz, you might want to check out some sites that tell you how to optomize your O.S. for music.
If the second time you open Acid it's a little quicker, I'd think along the lines of memory allocation, no?
Maybe someone who knows more about the guts of the PC could step in.
Maybe a complete Windows re-install?

Do you still have Acid 3 installed? My load time dropped to normal after I removed it from my system.

How much swap-space you do run with? It is usually recommended that you set your swap-space to 2-3x your memory unless you have windows managing it. I generally do NOT let windows do my swap/page file managing. Something to try anyways.

Hey Mike...That's what I was thinking when I mentioned the memory allocation.

Disable Net Notify in the general ACID preferences.
Do you have any network drivers mounted?
