Alas... DVD-A is burning coasters :-(

earthrisers wrote on 2/7/2003, 12:48 AM
I just tried preparing and burning my first DVD using DVD-A, which I purchased yesterday.
It claims to have "prepared" the file okay, but when it starts to burn, it gets a little bit into burning the "lead-in", then fails, with an error saying something about a "sensing" error and something about sending my DVD-burner a bad command.
Tried it twice, and then even re-prepared the file and tried again to burn. Same result. My burner is a Pioneer DVR-A04.
Then I burned a DVD using my "old" software (DVD Complete), just to make sure it isn't my burner that's failing. But that worked just fine.
Sigh . . . not sure what to do next.

Me too, I have a A05 and a A04 at work... I tested the A04 at work and no problem. but at home I can't get the A04 or the A05 to finish a disk.
I get for the A05:

I did a search for the file "sfmmcx.cpp " but it does not live on my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for posting the entire error message, Dan... that's exactly the same one I'm getting. My burner is a Pioneer A04.

DVD coasters are EXPENSIVE!

Just a side note: the problem only exist on my home machine, everything is ok on my workstation at work and on my laptop.... I am wondering if some other software that may be installed is conflicting with DVDA. I have sent an e-mail to SF but not heard back yet.

Interesting. Sounds like whatever it is, probably isn't SoFo's fault. But I sure hope they can help us run down the problem.
Lajko wrote on 2/7/2003, 6:46 PM
Check the firmware revisions on the drives. Pioneer posts updates for the drive firmware and your two drives could have different firmware revisions.
earthrisers wrote on 2/7/2003, 7:19 PM
Good thought, Lajko, but I downloaded the latest firmware upgrade (rev.1.4) and tried again, and the result is the same. Another expensive coaster.

So the problem must lie elsewhere...

Can't you burn it to a rewriteable disk?. That's what I did with Ulead DVD Movie Factory when I was experimenting.

I've seen problems reported when you have "packet writing" software such as
Easy CD Creator on your computer. Not sure of the specific reasons though.
earthrisers wrote on 2/8/2003, 9:30 AM
Another good idea, John/Craftech.
(I shoulda thought of that, yes? Thanks for the reminder.)
I do have one or two "RW" discs, so I'll remember to use one of those next time I come up with, or hear about, an idea that might fix this problem.

At the moment, I'm awaiting the "next idea" or next flash of inspiration about what might be causing this (but I don't very often come up with flashes of inspiration about hardware problems).

Hey...
I've been having the same problem from the start also...Here is my error message...maybe it can give someone some more clues to the problem? Notice the difference on the second line to the error message above...A hardware conflict?
I also tried dumping Easy CD Creator 5....same result...

Are you buring at 1X or 2X?

I had a simlar error with my Pioneer A04 when I burned at 2X. I switched it to 1X and it burned without error.

I have the identical problem with my DVR-104

I made one bad DVD-R earlier, same problem. Thought
at the time it might have been other CPU load issues
while burning, until I saw this forum.

Oddly enough, I get the same error when DVD-A
Burn Mode is set to "Test Only"
so it is not a transient CPU load issue when
doing the actual burning, but something in
ATAPI calls.

I do not have
Easy CD Creator 5 installed. I have NERO 5.5.8.2 installed.
I don't know of any other packet writing apps.
But, I must have the same bad ATAPI driver version/
combo as others that have the same problem.

I am running Win2K SP 2

Not a showstopper for me, as I just use DVD-A to burn
DVD directory structure, and then use trusty Nero to
actually burn.

earthrisers wrote on 2/9/2003, 6:45 PM
Hey, Xactoz -- good idea!
I hadn't considered using Nero to burn the prepared DVD file.
I tried that, and it worked perfectly!

It's sad to have to go to Nero to burn, rather than doing it from within DVD-A, but it sure gets around the problem. As you said... Good, reliable, ol' Nero!

Thanks for suggesting that.

The same thing is happening to me when when I try to burn using nero. I also have had a problem with the disc only playing on the computer and not on my player when I burned it from DVD-A. This was on a DVD+RW disc that has worked fine in the past when I was working in Ulead DVD Workshop.

I did a search and people were saying to use the DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO) instead. I am trying that at the moment....
jzavala wrote on 2/10/2003, 9:28 PM
Did it work the UDF/ISO approach?, at least I try it in simulation mode without getting an error message.

I wish to know if it work

No it did not work for me... :-(
xactoz wrote on 2/11/2003, 8:16 AM
Well...a set of DVD files I prepared yesterday burned fine in Nero.
Today, I get the same error in Nero as jzavala:

File size is not a multiple of a logical block size (2 KB)
DVD-Video files reallocation failed, the DVD may not be usable, do you want to continue.

Not really having the time to figure out what is different between
the two set of files, I figure I would try DVD-A again to burn.

I set speed to 1X and it burned fine...today :-)

We finally have an in-house repro on this bug and are working to get it fixed. A temporary workaround is to use -RW media. That type seems to work fine.

Sorry and thanks for all the information,

Windows XP Pro, version 2002, Service Pack 1.
Pioneer A04, with latest firmware.

Using -R or -RW media, I get the same error message as reported a few times before by various folks, including the message immediately before this one.
As I've mentioned earlier, though, it works fine burning with Nero, so that's my workaround.
