DV Recording via Firewire????

fokkerpro wrote on 2/12/2003, 12:58 AM
Ok, I have spent hours upon hours researching this, and asking this to many people. Is it possible to record video FROM the pc TO the DV Camera via the FIREWIRE? In Example, to show what I am talking about: If I was playing a video game, is there a way I could record that video game to my camera? Saying, is there a way to set it so whateber I see on the PC monitor, thje camera records, through the firewire? Thanks. All, and ANY help is VERY appreciated!

Im gonna bump this back up to the top because this is really important to me, and Im not even going to bother calling the tech support because all they do is send me to another number, and so on and so fourth.

No. You can't do that. At all.

Try displaying your game through the tv output available on most current video cards into the video in of your DV camera (if it has one). Record what you want on tape and then dump it back to the PC via the firewire.

I doubt it. The firewire is a data transfer device, not a video device. You would need a video card that has a digital out to accomplish this.

You might try CamStudio - captures (video) on your pc. You still need a way to get from A to B though.

Snag It is another screen capture program out there. It will capture stills, video, or even just part of your screen if I recall. I used it very briefly on something a while ago.

If you have video out on your graphics card:

I did this: Enabled TV out on the graphics card on my PC,
connected S-video out on graphics card to S-video inn
on my DV camera, (Sony PC-100) and pressed Record.

Then I transfered from the tape to harddrive and made
some Divx movies. Quite fun!

Well none of this is really helpful to me. The capturing devices dont work, because it takes up WAY too much memory to run the game, and the program at once, even with 1.5 gigs of ram! I would do the Svideo, except for one reason. The store I bought the camera from told me the wrong information on the camera specs when I ordered it. I specifically asked them if the DV camera includes Svid in, AND out. They told me "Yes, this model is equipped with both SVideo Input, and Output. Well they were wrong. The camera only has Svideo Output, meaning I can only transfer files from my DV Cam, to my PC. I have asked them time and time again to refind me due to faulty information, and even with my warranty(lifetime, by the way) they wont refund me for that reason! I really need to find someway to record this! If it is not possible through the FireWire, is there a way to mabey "trick" the svideo, so that it can go either way? Thanks...

Here is the link to my camera for the specs, incase you were wondering what it is capible of... http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL026781

so....I guess there is no way? I was told by someone that it is possible, but when I am SOO close to finally finding the answer, my stupid internet crashes, for a whole 7 hours, and I never got any contact info on that person, so unless teh unlikely chance of him contacting me, I will never know the answer unless somoene here knows.

Since your camcorder's analog video in is disabled, you need a stand-alone A/D converter. Entry level is the Canopus ADVC 50.

I believe the Canopus ADVC 50 is capture only: ie: it will not output to tape. The Canopus ADVC 100 however allows both capture and print to tape. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I think an analog capture device is what our friend fokkerpro needs. The ADVC 50 inputs analog video (from, I assume fokkerpro's video card) and outputs DV via Firewire in real time. The ADVC 50 output can be connected directly to a camcorder's Firewire port. Alternatively (and actually more to the point in this case), the ADVC 50 output can be directed to a PC Firewire port and the DV file can be saved on a hard drive and be immediately accessible for editing in VV.

Checking the specs & camera manual from the link you provided, I'd say you are right, there doesn't seem any way to get an analog signal into your camcorder. Also agree that it might be possible to have a cable rewired or use one with different routing to the plug to allow analog video in.

I would suggest research to see if some other brand sells the same camera as this JVC model. Often one company will make the basic camera, which is then branded by several other companies, often with a few more or a few less features. It's possible that another brand might offer a cable going the other way, the way you want. IF you can't find one, maybe JVC could give you the specs to have one made?

If none of this pans out, then the external box would seem the only way to go, something that does what you wanted the camera to do: accept an analog input and convert it to digital video. This is the cheapest one I'm aware of http://www.megamacs.com/v1/?action=view&pid=1462065

Ok, I am not sure what all this means in reguards to the last 3 replies. is the ADVC 50 a camera? Is it a wire? If it is a camera, I cant spare the money to buy a new one over 70 dollars. If you want to know what kind of video card I have, well I have a GeForce4 Ti4200 64Meg. Also, is this what I need, so I can capture live video from my PC to my DV Camera?

/bump...I really need to know. A future job of mine sort of depends on this.

JackHughs has described your solution:

The ADVC50 is a PCI card from Canopus. It takes analog video/audio in...encodes it to DV... and outputs the DV over a FireWire out connection. (Like your camera but without the lens, CCD chip etc.)

The device is designed to let consumers convert their analog tapes and other video sources to DV - especially if their camera doesn't have analog in (ouch!) :(

As Jack suggests, in theory you should be able to take the analog video signal from the back of your i4200 card, feed it into an ADVC50 -- and then record the DV back to your camera (or back in to a PC's 1394 port) from the ADVC-s FireWire output.

Details are here:

Good luck!

fokkerpro; Would it be acceptable to output to your VCR? Or must it be your camera? If VCR you could use the ADS TV Elite. It is $100, so may not fit your budget. It interrupts your monitor cable from your video card, and splits the signal into digital and analog with no loss. The digital continues to your monitor, the analog is a RCA plug. It carries video only, so you would have to route your line out, or speaker cables, to your VCR, for the audio. I run mine to a Radio Shack AV switch. which increases the number of devices I can feed. I've used mine for a couple of years with no problems. Another advantage is it uses no PC resources, and merely passes thru your monitor display. For another 30 bucks that job may be worth it.
john http://www.videowarriorstraining.com/ADS/xga_128_tvelite.htm I fogot it also comes with a remote. Good Luck

Is there a more affordible version of this? I am short on cash at the moment, because I am paying for my car paint job. I can afford to spend up to about 70 to 100 dollars. Also, are there any major stores(Best Buy, Circuit City...) I can find this at? Thanks!
