what do you people want in a piano loop CD

I would like once-shots of all the main chords. Major, minor, 7ths, etc., of different lengths too...ie. four count, eight count, twelve count. Solos in various styles, as well as some grooves in jazz, rock, latin, blues and country. Kind of a tall list, but that would be really cool. And of course played on a real piano.

Thanks for asking.

excellant,

Thats exactly what we are doing. But we are going to do it on a hot rodded motif going digital direcly in to the computer.

And then we include all the midi files along with each audio take. We feel the motif sound is extreamly high quality and the clean sound lends itself very well to mutitrack recordings without adding too much mud.

are you saying you would only want a miced piano?

Not necessarily. I realize that there are some awesome piano synths out there that are very capable of imitating a real piano. Some of the subtleties are lost, but that’s part of the cost of clean digital signals and the reality of electronics. I think it would be really cool to include the midi file for each loop. Are you planning on making the library available on your own, or are you going to submit it to a company? Take the extra time to make sure the loops can stretch correctly. I’ve heard many loops that only work at a specific tempo and are thus not all that usable.

Right now there are a couple different companies who have heard demos and are interested.

It will become a matter of what makes the most bussiness scence,so time will tell.

what was it you found that made the loops not stretch well? Just poor acidization or was it something else you noticed.

I think it may have been poor Acidization actually. It has been with three different sources too. One was from Steinberg, and two were from individuals. All of the loops sounded "watery" as soon as their inherent tempo was changed. Also, be careful not to have bleed though of your metronome or time source. If you’re going to go direct it won’t be a problem, but there are a few libraries out there where you can actually hear a faint click or a high hat. Very distracting. Please keep us up to date as I would be very interested in hearing what you come up with.

I love the idea of including midi files.

why not prep midi files on the motif and then find a studio with a Disklavier Grand Pro for the recording? Nothing against the motif in principle...but why record a sampled piano to create loops (which will be stretched) when you could record the real thing?

Thanks for the input,

Im not sure I believe that a mic on a piano will get you better time streatching than a digitally recorded take. I could be argued that the added transients in the real piano loop could produce artifacts easier.

I could be compleatly wrong though.

when i make grand piano samples i use 6 large diaphram condensers on seperate channels/tracks

mics 1/2: spread evenly over the hammers
mics 3/4: spread evenly over the strings midway
mic 5: overhead about 3' away from the body aimed into the case
mic 6: 4' from the rear gets aimed to pickup the room abience

after eq/pan/mix the result is very accurate.

if you don't have that capability, it would behoove you to goto a studio.

i don't think those that want great piano loops would want samples of an emulated piano.

good luck
