Subject:DC Adjust & Calibrate in SF6

Not sure when to use this "Calibrate" option. The help file says "before starting recording." What does that mean? Before starting recording but in the *absence* of input signal or while input signal is *present*? Either way, every time I click this button, I get totally different values for "Left" and "Right". What sort of "calibration" is this when these values depend very much on the moment in time I do calibration? Again, the values for "Left" and "Right" I obtain upon clicking the Calibration button seem pretty random. How can one trust this "Calibration" in these conditions? P.S. Is there any way to do this DC adjust after recording (i.e. as part of post-processing)? |

I have done it after recording, using DC offset in the Process menu. Take Care |

The Calibrate button should be pushed before Recording with no audio signal input to remove any residual DC offset from whatever A/D converter you have selected for input. Many low cost audio cards have DC offsets that will cause problems later if not removed. You can also remove DC offsets from recorded files as noted by rjt, but it is best to take them out before recording to minimumize the reduction of dynamic range in the recording. If the varying numbers you get are low (1 to 10 or so) I would not worry. If they are large that means some thing is flaky in the A/D converter in your sound card. Bill |
