Hello figure I'd be up front with the question because I'm new to VV and Acid. I keep seeing this mentioned in the VV section of the forum and figured it was time to ask. Appreciate it!

It compresses your audio using a method dev'd by Dolby. It's the standard on DVDs and lets you fit much more high-quality video on your DVD. If you don't use AC3 encoded audio on your DVDs, you can only fit about 60 minutes of high-quality video. With AC3. . .about double.

Hollywood DVDs can squeeze even more onto a single DVD because they can put dual layers on a single DVD. We mortals at home can't do that.

AC3 encoders are usually expensive because the technology must be licensed from Dolby. There is a freeware AC3 encoder called AC3 Machine, but it probably violates Dolby's license. It's also takes some practice to use properly.

Thanks dvdfool!! You mentioned that AC3 encoder compressed audio files? Does it do the same to video files, or is it allowing more video to fit on a DVD because the audio has been compressed?! When you say it doubles the amount you can put on a dvd, is there any compatibility issues in then playing it in any dvd players? Once again thanks, that helped me to understand AC3 encoder. Have a great night!!!

All US DVD players are required to recognise ac-3 files. I believe most players in the rest of the world are compatible with ac-3, although it may not officially be part of the spec.

And yes, you can fit more video on a disc simply because the audio is taking up less space using ac-3 compared with PCM. ac-3 directly affects audio only, not video.
