Help! Can't open the newly purchased upgrade Vegas 4.0!

efiebke wrote on 2/5/2003, 7:32 PM
Just purchased and downloaded the Vegas 4.0 + Architect DVD upgrade.

I can open the Architect DVD program. I can not open the Vegas 4.0 (build 115)program. I keep on getting an Error Message that says that it will report the error to Microsoft.

I've inputted the correct codes, I think. Done it three time! Even re-downloaded the program once and attempted to re-install (for the 3rd time).

What could I be doing wrong?!?!?

My computer set-up:
Dell Precision Workstation 420
Pentium III 733
1 GB DDRAM
2 internal hard drives (both 7200)
1 External firewire based hard drive (7200) - using ADS PYRO Hard disk thingy
Sony DRX-500UL DVD burner
Plextor's 12/10/32 s external scsi CD burner
MOTU's 2408 mkII
MOTU's Midi Timepiece AV
Window XP Pro SP1

Note: My internal sound card is turned off as well as my internal network card.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Respectfully,

Edward (Ted) Fiebke

Call SoFo in the morning.

Ted,

Try this:

1) From your Desktop, right-click My Computer and go to Properties
2) Click on the Advanced tab
3) Click the Error Reporting button
4) Click the Disable error reproting radio button (but leave "Notify me when errors occur" checked)

Now, when you open Vegas, does it give you a different error? Are there Details to the crash? Is there any other hardware not in your list such as things attached via USB, or otherwise? Please, let me know and we'll get you fixed up ASAP.

Thank you for reply! I'm going to do what you suggest now! Will call if things don't work out.

Just did as you suggested. It gives a huge long detailed error report. One thing mention, before clicking on the error report is the following:

modname: dinput8.dll
offset: 000147cf
Mod: 5.1.2600.1106

I guess I'll be giving you guys a call. . . :(

This is the first time ever that I've experienced a problem with down loaded program. I've recently upgraded my memory from 512 mb to 1 gb. I wonder if that is the problem? Everything was working fine, though. All programs. My Vegas Video 3.0c including. The Vegas 4.0 beta version worked flowlessly!

I'm in over my head. . .

Will give you guys a call.

Thank you for responding!

Do you have a joystick installed? dinput8.dll is part of the DX Direct Input support - i.e. joysticks.

Go to Control Panel > Gaming Devices and open up the properties for your joystick (do you have one?). Does everything function there?

What version of DirectX do you have installed? Perhaps update it. There are installers on Microsoft's site.

Yesterday I purchased the upgrade to Vegas 4.0 + DVD Architect 1.0. I did all that I needed to do to get the program up and running by putting in the activation codes. Much to my dismay, the Vegas 4.0 program did not open. I kept on getting those Microsoft error messages. Several times I tried uninstalling, reinstalling the program (it was like banging your head on the wall to see if the pain will go away. . . and the pain never goes away. . . it just gets worse!)

Well. . . I just spoke to Ted of Sonic Foundry about 10 minutes ago (at around 10:10 a.m. 2/6/2003). He was very helpful in providing choices in taking care of the problem. I have a couple midi/audio recording programs: Steinberg's SX and Emagic's Logic 5.5 (the Platinum version). Both programs require dongles to run their programs. Well, it's the dongle that goes to Emagic's Logic program that caused my problem. I have both dongles on a Belkin USB 1.0 multiport. Normally, things work fine. Apparently things don't work fine with dongle to Emagic's Logic and opening up the Vegas 4.0 program. (Interestingly, the dongle to Steinberg's SX works just fine with Vegas 4.0)

Never had a problem opening up the DVD Architect program.

So . . . for those of you own both Emagic's Logic 5.5 with dongle and Vegas 4.0. . . see if you have similar problems. If so. . . take out that damned dongle!!!

My warmest gratitude to Ted for his help and to the entire Sonic Foundry team for developing a really great program.

And. . . my warmests wishes to you all as you work on all of your video projects!

Cheers! :)

Hi.

I just installed Vegas+DVD and whatever I did, Vegas 4.0 didn't want to start because of the dinput8.dll error.

This is the error in the Event viewer from Windows XP Pro SP1:

Faulting application vegas40.exe, version 4.0.0.115, faulting module dinput8.dll, version 5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x000147cf.

I read your message, took my Emagic Logic Platinum 5.5 dongle out of my PC, now it works... Now I remembered why I hate dongles. :(

Regards,
Diederick.

We just saw a third case of this as well, there's something up. We'll investigate.

SonicDennis:

(Understand that I'm at work now, away from my home computer)

I pretty much got the same message:

Faulting application vegas40.exe, version 4.0.0.115, faulting module dinput8.dll, version 5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x000147cf.
(Copied for the user "Died" message.) I clearly remember the dinput8.dll in the Microsoft error message. Hope this helps.

Again - all problems went away when I took out Emagic's dongle for the Logic program. Just curious. Could the problem stem from their end? I'm able to keep Steinberg's dongle for the SX program with no problems opening and utilizing the Vegas 4.0 program.

Respectfully,

Edward (Ted) Fiebke

I have the same problem with two separate WinXP Pro systems.
One of these systems is dual boot with Win98. In Win98 I do not have the problem!

Jor:

We've confirmed it's a problem with the XSKey that comes with emagic logic. It also prevents "Start > Control Panel > Game Controllers" from working, and crashes the DirectX DirectInput samples. We'll be talking to emagic and Microsoft about a fix, because it's definately NOT something Vegas is doing.

In the meantime, the forthcoming Vegas 4.0b update starts up with joystick support turned off, and you have to turn it on with a new switch in Preferences. This will prevent the crash on startup. However, if you have an XSKey, do NOT turn on the preference or you will crash when you hit "OK". This is the best we can do, until emagic or Microsoft fixes their stuff.

SonicDennis,

Another example of competent, conscientious support from SoFo! This could have been a difficult problem but with good detective work it got solved in a reasonably short time. This sort of performance reflects favorably on Sonic Foundry, and builds customer loyalty.
