Subject:Sound card setup in Acid - ?

Hello -

When using a sound card that includes a break out box (Delta 44 for instants: which has 4 inputs & 4 outs), is it still possible to use my original PC speakers for play back or monitoring? In Acid audio preferences it only allows me to select one Audio device. Can I select the DELTA for input and basic PC sound slot for output? Did I explain this worth a dang?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

If you're using "Windows Classic Wave" instead of ASIO for the driver model, you should be able to select multiple outputs on multiple devices for output. You should have a playback device selector button available in the Mixer. When you add a Bus, you should be able to direct specific tracks to specific outputs on different devices. (ASIO does not have such a luxury, unfortunately.)

When you go to record, you should have the ability to choose a specific input on different devices under "Recording device".

Iacobus -

I spent close to $300 on this M-Audio Delta 44 card. This included a box which hooks to the card itself, it has 8 quarter inch slots (4 in, 4 out). Are you saying since it is ASIO I will not be able to use my "Windows Classic Wave" simultaniously? Should I have purchased a different sound card setup?

Thanks much.

It is not a limitation of the Delta 44, only a limitation of the driver model being used. ASIO talks directly to one sound and one soundcard only. That means you cannot record on the Delta 44 while playing back on your PC's plain-vanilla (onboard?) soundcard.

Switch to "Windows Classic" and you should be able to use both soundcards.

It doesn't matter what soundcard we're talking about either. I have both an Audiophile 2496 and USB Duo and cannot use both in ACID when ASIO is used as the driver model. Only Windows Classic allows me to use both. The same applies to other multiple soundcard/audio interface setups.

Fear not. Your money was well spent on the Delta 44.

Iacobus -

Would it benefit me to use the "Delta ASIO" verses "Windows Classic" when selecting main audio device? Does this effect the quality of my recordings in any way? Also, even when I select "Windows Classic" then set all 3 play back devices to the Delta 44 it still plays out of my "onboard" pc speakers. Is something not working right here?

Thx

Hi again Tommy,

There's really not too much of a difference as both are comparable models. ASIO is slightly better in the MIDI department while WDM (Windows Classic or MME) has better flexibility as I've mentioned.

Check the playback device selector in ACID's Mixer window (in the lower right).

(How do you have whatever you have for monitoring connected?)

Iacobus -

I have a basic set of PC speakers running out of the sound card which came with the PC... I assume those should work when selecting "Windows Classic" correct? For some reason when I select "Windows Classic" and then set the 3 output devices (Default Stereo and Front, Rear, Center) to the Delta 44 it still plays out of the PC speakers........ Just for the note, at this point I haven't even done any actually recording, or even testing for that matter. I am simply try to grasp the whole ins & outs of the whole sinario so that I don't bump into any major problems when I do finally decide to take a swing at it....

My computer does this as well. Here's my work around: Set the playback to ASIO (either one) and then hit apply. Then set it to Windows Classic and choose the Delta outs. Now hit OK. Hopefully your sound will now be coming out of the Delta.

Hmmm. Remember that you won't be able to monitor what you're recording via the Delta 44 unless you route the output of the Delta 44 to another device like a mixer or another soundcard (which would be used just for playback in this case).

(I'm overstating the obvious here, but I just wanted to make sure you knew.)

Greetings All,

I have yet to install a soundcard in my PC (sounds currently coming from my PC Chips M810 LMR motherboard) and would like some advice.

I'm currently considering RME Multiface, Echo Layla and Creamware Pulsar II (I would love the MotU 24i/o but it's a bit pricey and I've heard that it's better suited to Mac anyway).

My present set-up is a PC running an AMD Duron 1.3GHz cpu, mobo mentioned above, WinXP (Home), Acid Pro 4.0b, Sound Forge 6.0d going into an Alesis Studio 24 (8 mono, 4 stereo, 2 buss with 8 tape in and 8 direct out on RCA). I'm using the RCA connectors on the mixer to run into and out of the PC.

I have a Roland (Edirol) PC-160A MIDI keyboard controller but I don't have any MIDI ports on the mixer or PC, therefore I would like my soundcard/PCI to handle both analouge audio and MIDI. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Also considering the Terratec EWS88MT - any comments on this?

The EWS88 MT certainly looks nice. Also take a look at the Audiophile 2496 from M-Audio. It has RCA analog phono I/O in addition to S/PDIF I/O and MIDI I/O. (You can find it for about $180 USD.) You should be able to interface it with the Studio 24.
